Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)

The Conestoga College LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program offers English classes for adult newcomers who wish to improve their language skills for life, for work, and for further learning. Conestoga College LINC is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Eligibility: Must be a landed immigrant, permanent resident or a convention refugee to Canada.

Cost: FREE

Availability: Classes are open for all levels from literacy to CLB Level 8. Individuals interested in LINC classes need to be assessed at the Language Assessment Centre of the YMCA Cross Cultural and Community Services in order to determine starting level. Morning and afternoon classes are offered at all three locations.

English Language Studies

4-level certificate language skills program to prepare students for further studies at colleges/universities

Location: Doon Campus

Eligibility: Open. An in-house placement test OR a TOEFL or IELTS score determines your level.

Cost: Tuition and fees approximately $1900 a semester (2012-2013)

English as a Second Language Part time/ Continuing Education

English as a Second Language courses to help you meet your communication goals. These courses are offered in the evening.

Location: Doon and Waterloo campuses

Eligibility: Open

Enhanced Language Training for Engineering Professionals (ELT)

Develop communication skills you'll need in the workplace. "Enhanced Language Training for Engineering Professionals" provides language instruction based on realistic workplace tasks, preparing you to interact with colleagues and clients.

Features of the program:

  • 16 weeks of Enhanced Language and Employment Readiness Training (210 hours)
  • Project Management Training 2 evenings per week
  • Mentoring by an Engineering professional
  • Canadian workplace Culture and Integration
  • Possible Job Shadowing/Work Experience Placement
  • FREE Program, funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada

Education and Language Pre-requisites:

  • Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) scores of at least 6 in all 4 skill areas
  • Must provide proof of being an Internationally Educated Engineer
  • Attained International work experience in Engineering or related field
  • Must be a permanent resident or protected person of Canada (NOT a Canadian Citizen)

Workplace Communication Skills for Accounting

Workplace Communication Skills for Accounting will help you:

  • understand business workplaces in Ontario
  • communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, financial officers and governmental offices
  • develop strong interviewing, networking and career-building communication skills.

Features of the program:

  • 15 weeks of classes, 12 hours a week
  • Introduction to communication for general business purposes with a particular focus on accounting
  • hands-on learning activities such as role-playing exercises, dialogue practice sessions, and simulations of common on-the-job experiences
  • workshops provided by content experts
  • This program is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Location: Waterloo Campus, 108 University Ave. E., Waterloo

Eligibility:

  • training or experience in Business/Accounting
  • an intermediate level of English (Canadian Language Benchmarks 6-8)
  • landed immigrants, permanent residents or convention refugees to Canada

  • understand health care workplaces in Ontario such as hospitals, clinics and nursing homes
  • clearly and effectively interact with colleagues, clients and supervisors
  • develop strong interviewing, networking and career-building communication skills

Features of the program:

  • 15 weeks of classes, 12 hours a week
  • hands-on learning activities such as role-playing exercises, dialogue practice sessions, and simulations of common on-the-job experiences
  • workshops provided by content experts
  • This program is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Eligibility:

  • training or experience in nursing or personal support work
  • an intermediate level of English (Canadian Language Benchmarks 6-8)
  • landed immigrants, permanent residents or convention refugees to Canada

  • Hands-on learning activities such as role-playing exercises, dialogue practice sessions, and simulations of common on-the-job experiences

  • Training or experience in engineering, information, architectural or environmental technology
  • An intermediate level of English (Canadian Language Benchmarks 6-8)

Workplace Communication Skills for Interprofessional Health Care Providers

Communication Skills covered in this course include:

  • Providing and obtaining information on the care of a client
  • Describing your occupation to another professional
  • Writing a progress note
  • Seeking and providing assistance to team members
  • Managing challenging team interactions

Features of the program:

  • 10 weeks of classes, 10 hours a week in class and 4 hours a week online
  • Hands-on learning activities such as role-playing exercises, dialogue practice sessions, and simulations of common on-the-job experiences
  • Workshops provided by content experts
  • This program is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Eligibility for the Inter-professional Health Care Provider course:

  • You have a background in the profession.
  • Your English is at an intermediate level – Canadian Language Benchmarks 6 – 8.
  • You are a permanent resident or protected person

Cost: FREE

Availability: January 22 - March 29th, 2013 on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 - 12 and 1 - 3 at the Doon Campus. There is an additional online component to this class.
