About the Program

This skills-based program prepares students for entry into the electrical skilled trades industry, including apprenticeship. The program provides students with theoretical and practical experience on residential wiring standards and practices, commercial wiring techniques and applications, as well as industrial controls. The field of study also includes the industrial application of power systems, electrical motors, motor controls, generators, transformers, programmable logic controllers, solid-state controls and instrumentation. Students will gain advanced knowledge of electrical theory and its application to a variety of practical situations and be well versed in a variety of skills such as troubleshooting electrical systems, quality assurance and testing, and proper meter usage. In addition, safety standards and practices will be consistently used, including generic lock out/tag out procedures. This program covers all the learning outcomes for level 1 and level 2 of the related apprenticeship program in Ontario. A graduate of this program may not be required to complete the in-school apprenticeship training or take an exemption exam for levels 1 and 2 should they choose to pursue an electrical apprenticeship.
