Mature Students

The term “Mature student” isn’t intended to suggest any specific level of maturity on the part of the individual student, but rather indicates students who typically share a common identification of having various family, financial, and employment commitments and obligations, in addition to their pursuit of education on a full-time basis. While difficult to over generalize, such students may frequently be characterized by extremely high levels of commitment and motivation, as they are often responsible not only to themselves but to other family members who are dependent on them for their academic and career success. Juggling multiple responsibilities and time constraints are challenges that many face, and financing studies is often a significant concern since they may be sacrificing a regular salary and wages while they are now studying on a full-time basis. Additionally, confidence in their own academic abilities, adapting to new technologies used in the classroom, and adjusting to the school environment can represent a challenge given that a significant amount of time may have passed since they were last in an academic environment.

If you are a Mature student, and find yourself experiencing some of these types of challenges and difficulties, consider seeking out Counselling Services to make an appointment with a trained professional who can understand and assist you in devloping strategies for coping.
