Computer Lab Policies

Policies

  1. Lab access and limits

The normal hours of operation will be from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., seven days per week.  For security and safety reasons, not all computer labs will be unlocked during these times.  Contact Security Services for access to locked computer labs during this time.  You may be directed to use a lab that is already unlocked if the resources (software) you require are available.  Lab access can be extended through your program coordinator.

  1. Courtesy and ethics

In any shared work and network environment, common sense should prevail in relating to others. This includes monitoring noise levels, keeping clutter to a minimum, keeping food and beverages out of the computer lab and refraining from displaying images or texts which are morally inappropriate or which may offend others. College equipment must not be used to circulate electronic chain letters, to “flame” or harass other users with inappropriate messages, to take the intellectual property of others, or to engage in any other practice which violates the intended usage of computer labs.

  1. Pornography/inappropriate materials

Access to pornography or other materials deemed inappropriate by community and /or college standards, is  prohibited. As a consequence, intentional viewing and/or printing of these materials will result in suspension of user account privileges and filing of a Student Code of Conduct report.

  1. User Accounts

You may not allow any other person to use your computer account (login ID). These accounts are for the use of the person for whom the account was approved. Your password should never be given to anyone else. Students sharing their account number/login-in password etc. will have their privileges revoked. You can be held accountable for unauthorized use of your login privileges.

  1. Software installation

User installation of software on college-maintained servers and hard drives is forbidden. This is to ensure compliance with software licensing and registration requirements and to protect against the proliferation of viruses. Unlicensed or unauthorized software found on college systems is subject to immediate removal. Pirated software will be removed from any machine on which it is found. No support for installation or use can be provided by Computer Services for unauthorized software.

  1. Network disc space

Space for the storage of user files is finite. Remember to optimize the efficient use of the space provided to you and be attentive and responsive to the need to conserve space.

  1. Modification and movement

Under no circumstances may PCs, printers or other peripheral equipment associated with the computer lab be moved or modified. Remember that these are your machines and should be treated accordingly. Confirmed evidence of tampering will result in loss of lab privileges.

  1. Network Printers

Printing, including toner cartridges and paper, is paid for from your technology fee. Please minimize printing multiple versions of documents by proofreading and correcting the materials on-screen. Printing is limited to a maximum of 25 pages per document and 2 copies. Large documents must be printed in blocks of 25 pages. If you require additional copies, please use photocopy machines.

  1. Games

The unauthorized use of computer lab equipment for games is expressly forbidden.

  1. Headphones

Common sense dictates that a computer lab cannot sustain the use of speakers reproducing sound from a variety of websites. As a result, students seeking to access the audio portion of internet material and/or CD-ROMs must access that material using head phones. It is the responsibility of each student to provide his/her own headphones.

Open Access Lab Computing Goals

  1. To enhance the computing skills of Conestoga College students through the provision of increased access to the latest in both hardware and operating and applications software and related services.
  2. To provide Conestoga College students with enhanced computer skills through access to such things as e-mail and the Internet.
  3. To increase the availability of computer resources and to allow students to supplement time spent in scheduled teaching labs.
  4. To maintain a high standard, non-scheduled open access lab in which students may enhance their computing skills in a climate of consideration, co-operation and mutual respect.

Respect for System Security

Stay within the bounds of the system security.  Deliberate attempts to bypass system security, tampering, malicious damage and actions detrimental to other system users are not permitted.

Any action or attempt by any individual to subvert or disrupt the intended functioning of any facility is prohibited.

No person or persons shall by any willful or deliberate act, jeopardize the integrity of the computing equipment, its systems programs or other stored information.
