According to the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (Tech Act; P.L. 100-407), an AT device refers to "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off-the- shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities." Assistive technology (AT) devices offer a variety of options for individuals with learning disabilities to access the post secondary curriculum; to compensate for reading, mathematics, and writing difficulties; and to improve their quality of life across the life span (Bryant & Bryant, 1998) Technology can be either Low Tech or High Tech.
In July 2006 the Adaptive Technology Lab computers
were all upgraded to: Intel Pentium Duo Processor, 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, HD 149 GB.
The staff of the Adaptive Technology Computer Lab provide support, information, and training to all students registered with Disability Services, Conestoga College. The Lab is a drop-in facility as well as appointment driven.
The Lab is used by students with disabilities for homework, assignments, email, etc as well as use of adaptive technology. There is a member of staff on hand at all times, during opening hours, to assist you.
Students with disabilities who have 'using a computer' as an exam accommodation will use the Adaptive Technology Computer Lab, 2A107. During busy exam periods the computer lab is closed for the purpose of writing exams.
If you need to use a computer for exams please discuss this with your counsellor to be sure the testing accommodation is in place before exams commence.
Priority is always given to exam writing over general usage of the computer lab.
Trained in Adaptive Technology, this group of students is an integral part of the partnership between the Adaptive Technology Lab and the Learning Commons.
The Adaptive Technology Lab is for students with disabilities and the Learning Commons is accessible to the whole student body of Conestoga College. The ICANs will be working in both areas providing support to all our students requiring assistance with Adaptive Technology and other technology issues.
