eLearning - Departmental Practices

Over the past few years there has been a dramatic increase in the use of Conestoga’s Learning Management System (LMS) to create online courses, yet our support level remains the same. The higher level of demand for service has made immediate responses to inquiries impossible. In an effort to ensure our services are best utilitzed and all faculty needs are met, Curriculum and Educational Technology (CET) has implemented new departmental policies for faculty wishing to develop online courses:

1. Classroom Enhanced Online Course Shells (New + Renewal)

Please allow a minimum of 2 weeks for course creation (from the time the Course Request Form has been submitted to the time faculty receives course access). This is especially important during peak periods (for example semester start ups). A 24 hour response time is no longer possible due to the volume of requests and other administrative issues.

2. Fully Online + Hybrid Courses

In the instance of these two categories of development, Curriculum and Education Technology (CET) will be fully involved in the design, development, and delivery aspects. We anticipate this is necessary as ANGEL is a new platform, and we have been, and will be, working hard to ensure that all new courses and programs developed on ANGEL meet College requirements and follow best practices.

Your chair must complete the Development Support Request Form before a hybrid or fully online course can be set up.

3. Online Course Development Workshops for Faculty

The Educational Technology Department offers a workshop series that gives faculty the foundation needed to use online course development tools. Faculty wishing to develop an online course must attend the following workshops before they can receive an online account:

  • 1. ANGEL Content Management (PDEV0780)
  • 2. ANGEL Communication Tools (PDEV0785)

We also recommend that, as a minimum, you attend:

  • Introduction to Online Learning (PDEV0090)

In most cases, this practice will ensure that faculty have one full semester to attend the required workshops and give them time to develop a course for the following semester. More sessions of PDEV0795 (ANGEL Assessments), PDEV0790 (ANGEL Collaboration Tools), PDEV0800 (ANGEL Drop Box), PDEV0805 (ANGEL Gradebook), and PDEV0810 (ANGEL Learning Object Repository) are being added to our Training Schedule to accommodate this practice.
