2.When I input my WebCT ID and password and click on Log In my browser does one of the following:
2. When I input my WebCT ID and password and click on Log In my browser is redirected to another website or gives me a "page cannot be displayed error"
If you get a message saying that the "page cannot be displayed" double-check your connection to the internet. Make sure you are able to surf to other websites.
If your internet connection is fine then it is possible that your computer is infected with spyware, adware and/or a browser "hijacker". There are a number of freeware programs available on the internet to remove these programs from your computer. The two that have been most successful in correcting problems are Ad-Aware Personal SE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. Most often both programs must be installed in order to find all malicious files on your computer. Simply install, scan your computer and delete the know adware and spyware files that the programs find.
If you get a message stating that your username or password is incorrect (but it works fine on the computers in the college) double-check to make sure you are inputting your username and password correctly. Pay attention to capital letters as the system is case-sensitive. If you still encounter problems then Adware or Spyware could be the problem and you should follow the steps above.
Note: Most (free) file sharing programs are ad-supported which requires adware programs to be installed on your computer in order for the file sharing program to work. Removing these adware files may cause your file sharing program to stop working at which time you will have to re-install it.
3. When I click on the link for a PowerPoint presenation within my WebCT course I choose OPEN but all I get is a blank screen.
Try the following:
You may need to have Service Pack 2 for Office XP (or PowerPoint XP) installed. The Microsoft Office Update site will automatically determine what you need and guide you through the installation process.
Alternatively you can install a free PowerPoint viewer from Microsoft. Click here to go to the viewer download page. Follow the instructions to download and install the viewer on your machine.
4. When I click on a link for a PowerPoint nothing happens or it gets blocked.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes a "download blocker" which prevents files from being downloaded unless the user specifies otherwise. To get around this you can add WebCT as a "trusted site".
Open Internet Explorer. From the Tools menu select Internet Options. Click on the Security Tab and then on the Trusted Sites icon. Click on the Sites button and a new window will open. Remove the checkmark from "Require server verification" and then type the address for WebCT in the "Add this Web site to the zone" area (http://webct4.conestogac.on.ca). Click on Add.
5. When I click on a message in Private Mail or on the Bulletin Board it does not open or it gets blocked.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes a "pop-up blocker" which prevents files from being downloaded unless the user specifies otherwise.
If that doesn't solve the problem you may have a Toolbar program installed that is blocking the pop-up window. Yahoo Toolbar and MSN Toolbar are a couple of examples. Either remove these toolbar programs using Add/Remove Programs or make sure the pop-up blocker is turned off when you are in WebCT.
