This diploma program serves the industry demand for recognized technicians and advanced electrical apprentices.
The curriculum provides extensive coverage of electrical theory and its application in a variety of practical situations. Theoretical and practical experience on residential wiring standards and practices, commercial wiring techniques and applications, as well as industrial controls is covered.
Students are well-versed in a variety of skills such as troubleshooting electrical systems, quality assurance and testing, and proper meter usage, as well as proper safety standards and practices.
Industrial application of power systems, electric motors, motor controls, generators, transformers, programmable logic controllers, solid state controls and instrumentation are studied and applied in structured lab settings.
Graduates are prepared to perform in residential, commercial and industrial work environments.
Student AvailabilityConestoga College facilitates recruitment on an ongoing basis - there are no hard deadlines. Typical time frames for work terms are listed below.
Postings are accepted beginning four months before the start of a term until all students have secured employment provided the minimum 12 consecutive weeks of full-time work is met.

Work Term CapabilitiesSpecific skills and abilities that students are typically capable of performing during a given work term are listed below.
Work Terms I and II
- Install various types of cables such as AC-90, NMD-90, LVT, and Teck cables
- Install emt, rigid metal, pvc, and flexible conduits
- Install various electrical device and junction boxes used in common electrical systems
- Interconnect common types of electrical devices and outlets
- Install single phase electrical services c/w proper grounding requirements
- Connect DC motors complete with common manual and/or magnetic motor staring techniques
- Connect DC, single-phase AC and three-phase AC induction motors c/w common manual and/or magnetic motor starting techniques
- Install and connect various types of common light fixtures and associated components
- Properly document material usage, requirements, and other job-site requirements
- Familiar with generic WHMIS, lock-out and tag-out, shop hazards and fire emergency procedures
Work Term III
- Effectively use a multi-meter, clamp-on ammeter, and other common measuring devices to verify, troubleshoot, and commission basic electrical systems
- Install and connect Class A, Class B, and Addressable Fire Alarm components
- Connect single-phase AC and three-phase AC induction motors complete with common manual and/or magnetic motor starting techniques
- Install basic three-phase electrical service components
- Install exit and emergency lighting systems
- Install smart relay and PLC hardware and field devices
- Develop basic logic relay programs for common PLC applications
- Connect common PID and other instrumentation devices
- Install, connect, and program AC and DC motor drive units
- Install and connect control, isolation, and distribution transformers
- Properly identify different types of voltage systems, life systems, and other electrical systems commonly found in industry
