The GREEN Committee (Greater Recycling Environmental Education Network) is an advisory group consisting of members of employee groups, the CSI and Facilities Management. Representatives from Purchasing, Martin’s Building Maintenance and Chartwell Food Services are also involved. Regular meetings are held to ensure that programs are in place to achieve Conestoga College’s overall initiatives of being environmentally friendly and having stewardship within the community.
The GREEN Committee was formed in December 2008 and the goals of the group were initially to enhance the awareness of current programs and increase participation within the Conestoga communities. Conestoga College currently participates in many initiatives. For example recycling has taken place since 1989, well before the province legislated programs. Conservation of utilities has always played a large role in the operations at Conestoga College and we are consistently below the system average for consumption.
We can do more!!
With this in mind the GREEN Committee will expand on what the college does as a community and will work to initiate and market further participation from students, faculty and staff. The committee wants to raise as much awareness as possible for the achievements we have made as a College.
In the future, the GREEN Committee will be challenged with reviewing practices related to hydro consumption, fossil fuel use and water consumption. In addition to energy and waste reduction goals, new more environmentally friendly products are reviewed by the committee. This is an area that is evolving with new techniques and products, but with a substantial cost. This committee assists in the evaluation of such programs.
