These awards, sponsored by Abell Pest Control, recognize the high quality of research being conducted by students at Conestoga College. The Outstanding Research Awards will be presented annually to a student in Conestoga’s Bachelor of Environmental Public Health, for conducting outstanding research related to environmental public health issues in Canada and abroad.

Amy Stiles Memorial Award
Amy was a beautiful loving wife and mother to three boys. She was a registered nurse, educator and all-around exceptional human being who always advocated for her patients, students and peers. She was a confident initiator and mentor, and continuously looked for opportunities to increase her knowledge as demonstrated by completing her Masters of Nursing in May 2016. Amy strongly believed in improving the living classroom model through her innovative thinking and leadership. Amy excelled in balancing all that she loved in her life including first and foremost her family, her personal and professional development, and her career. Amy was tragically killed in a car accident in November 2017. This award has been established by her colleagues in her memory.

Ardelle Darling was a very caring nursing educator at Conestoga. Ardelle was an active listener, empathetic, supportive, and respected for her treatment of others. She was well versed in sensitivity and positive "people skills". This award has been established by Ardelle's peers, students, friends and family to remember a legacy of care and warmth that she left behind at Conestoga.

The Community Integration through Cooperative Education
Cindy Kunder Memorial Award
Cindy was a 1985 graduate of Conestoga’s Nursing Diploma program (Stratford) and passed away in December 2015. Cindy was a surgical nurse in St. Thomas and was well loved and respected. This award has been established by her life-long friend and fellow Conestoga nursing alumnus, Marsha Koehler in honour of her memory. Students are asked to submit the ‘General Awards Application’ form in the winter semester. Students should complete the page on career goals, passion and commitment that speaks to their interest in Mental Health and/or Surgery, and a career in nursing.

Constable Jennifer Kovach Memorial Award
Guelph Constable Jennifer Kovach, 26, was tragically killed in the line of duty on March 14, 2013 while responding in her cruiser to a call for assistance by another officer. In honour of her memory, friends and colleagues would like to establish a memorial award at Conestoga College for a female student graduating from the Police Foundations program, the program from which Jennifer herself graduated in 2007.

The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic of Waterloo Nursing Achievement Award
Dr. Robert Shenker and The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic's passion is helping people; a passion pursued every day at their clinic.  Dr. Shenker has been a guest speaker at Conestoga on a number of occasions and has established this award to give back to the community and reward a student who assumes a leadership role, helps others as well as displays the professional qualities and behaviours expected of a registered nurse.

David Ferrede Health and Safety Award
David Ferrede started his firefighting career at the Kitchener Fire Department in 1982. He was passionate about contributing to his community, and as a health enthusiast, David was also dedicated to wellness, fitness, and training. He was eager to implement and master new practices that protected firefighters and increased the safety of their work. Sadly, two years after fighting a toxic fire, David was diagnosed with cancer. He died in 1989 at the age of 32. This award was established to honour David's inspiring commitment to firefighting and the application of health and safety practices to enhance and protect the lives of future firefighters.

Edith Jackson Memorial Endowed Bursary
Edith Jackson was a graduate of Victoria Hospital in London and worked as a nurse for many years including a number of years at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener. Upon the accidental death of her husband, Mrs. Jackson became a single mother of three boys. Mrs. Jackson passed away at the age of 92 years in May 2007. This award has been established by her three sons - William, James and Robert in loving memory of their mother.

Indira Kalsi Memorial Bursary
Indira Kalsi attended Conestoga to receive her Nursing Assistant diploma. She went on to work in homes for the aged and in a pharmacy as a pharmacy Assistant. Indira's career of caring for others was cut short when she boarded an ill-fated flight from Canada to India in June 1985. Indira's family hope that this bursary will help the recipient complete his or her diploma and go on to provide the care and compassion for others that Indira gave in her short life.

Jane Irving Bursary
Jane Irving was a well-loved and respected teacher who passed away in the mid 1980s after a battle with cancer. In honour of Jane who taught in the Social Services Program for ten years family, co-workers and friends established a memorial bursary to provide financial assistance to female students in the Social Services Program and the Human Services Foundation program.

This award has been established in memory of Jason Nitesh Ramtahal who passed away at the age of 26. Jason graduated from Conestoga’s Community & Justice Services diploma program in 2016. He was known for having a big heart and was loved by all he came in contact with.

Jean Levy Memorial Academic Grant
This award has been established in memory of a good friend and mentor, Jean Levy, who passed away in 1985. Jean was Chair of Health Science Programs (Nursing) at Conestoga from 1967-1985. Jean was truly an astute and trusting person and always encouraged her students to get involved. Her guidance helped many students succeed in their careers as nurses.

Jessica Smith Schiedel Bursary
Established in memory of Jessica Smith Schiedel a 2003 honours graduate of the Educational Assistant program. Working full-time, Jessica enrolled in the part-time mature student. She was energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated. Jessica's love for children and their love for her was an inspiration. Her experience with the program was one of the highlights of her life. The bursary is awarded once a year to a mature student in the Educational Assistant program in financial need.

Jim Sutton Memorial Endowed Award
Jim Sutton lived his life as a loving husband and father, and approached life with vibrancy and a sense of humour. He moved into Riverside Glen a few years after receiving a dementia diagnosis. Personal support staff encouraged Jim, even as he ‘helped’ organize their daily tasks. The entire staff in the Nichol neighbourhood always showed endless compassion, patience, and care. Their jobs, while not easy, made such a difference not just in Jim’s life, but in the lives of those who loved him. This award recognizes the impact that staff make in the lives of our most vulnerable. It celebrates their work and the lives of those they care for. This award is a memorial of Jim’s life, but is also a legacy of the work his personal support staff did to make his life better every day.

JMB Recreation Award
This award was established by Joanne Buchholzer in memory of her brother, John, who lived the majority of his life in a wheelchair, had an amazing spirit and still managed to have a positive outlook and great sense of humour. This award recognizes a second year student in the Recreation and Leisure Services program who displays caring and understanding. Preference will be given to a student who copes with a physical impairment.

Kathy Sullivan Memorial Award
This award was created in memory of Kathy Sullivan. Kathy was a nurse who touched the hearts of many. Kathy had a special way of bringing out the best in people and demonstrated empathy and compassion for everyone she encountered. Her love and dedication to nursing and her profession was noticed by her patients, their families and her colleagues. Kathy was kindhearted, hardworking, positive and supportive. Her colleagues and family remember Kathy as an extraordinary nurse and loving individual.

Margaret Grace Memorial Award
The Margaret Grace Memorial Award has been established by Stephanie Flynn and her family in honour of her mom, Margaret Grace, from Newfoundland, who died June 20, 2013 at the age of 87. Stephanie's mom epitomized compassion in all areas of her life. Every aspect of her being was about what she could do for others. Her caring nature made people feel better through her actions which were carried out in in a quiet, gentle and humble manner for which she never wanted or sought recognition. Many people were touched by her warm, tender and nurturing spirit.

Marilyn Kelly Memorial Award
Marilyn was a nurse and educator who touched the hearts of many. Marilyn had a special way of connecting with her students and demonstrated warmth and compassion for everyone she encountered. Her love and dedication to nursing and education was noticed by all who had the opportunity to work with her. Marilyn was kind hearted, hardworking, positive and supportive. For many she was the perfect example of what it means to be a nurse. Marilyn sadly passed away in November 2013 and this award has been established by her colleagues in her memory.

Patricia (Pat) Legault Memorial Award for 'The Art of Nursing'
Pat dedicated 19 of 60 years as a nurse and nurse educator to improving the education of nurses in this region. She was passionate about person-centered care long before it was in vogue. She believed holistic care and caring were the most important aspects of nursing and her curriculum and caring for her students demonstrated this.

Research Institute for Aging Entrance Scholarships
The Research Institute for Aging (RIA) created this award to support students enrolling in Conestoga’s Personal Support Worker (PSW). The entrance scholarships will be given to students enrolled in the “Living Classroom” at either the Schlegel Centre campus located at The Village at University Gates in Waterloo or The Village of Riverside Glen in Guelph.

This memorial bursary has been established by family and friends of Pte. Tyler Todd, a fun-loving and hardworking son and friend, who was always willing to help others. Tyler attended Conestoga as a pre-service firefighter student and was also a volunteer fire fighter with the Bright Fire Station.

Established in memory of Mrs. Violet Maria Noseworthy. When her husband walked out after the birth of her last child, Violet Noseworthy became a single mother of eight children. She understood the struggles associated with financial hardship. Her proudest achievement was the fact that all of her children have grown up to be successful members of society.
