Welcome

Who is a First Generation Student?

A first generation student is someone whose parent(s)/guardian(s) have NOT attended post-secondary education (i.e. college, university or an apprenticeship program) in Canada or in any other country.

In other words, first generation students are the first in their family (besides siblings) to attend post-secondary education.

Why have an Initiative for First Generation Students?

The First Generation Student Initiative is designed to help students (and their parents/families in some cases):

  • learn and overcome college hurdles and pressures,
  • navigate campus activities and adjust to college life,
  • successfully complete their program,
  • achieve their goals,
  • and obtain the career that they want

The Initiative does this by offering, in partnership with Student Services and Career Services, academic, career and personal support to meet the unique needs of each student by referring them to the resources (i.e. staff, support services, etc.) most suitable for them OR by creating new services.

There is an opportunity for every first generation student to receive the individualized support that makes the most sense for them. Support is available to assist First Generation students in achieving their personal and academic success.

At Conestoga College, we are proud to promote diversity amongst our students. This includes first generation students who, as a group, add tremendous value to the college.
