About the ProgramThis program will prepare you to pursue a career in the truck and coach repair industry and is offered through a partnership with International Trucks. Students must have a working relationship through an International Truck dealer or affiliate to participate in the program. The program is designed to provide a strong basis in general and specific trade-related academics, safety training, dealer specific on-line training and the foundation technical skills needed in the truck and coach technician trade specific to International equipment.
The delivery pattern for the International Technical Education Program (ITEP) will require students to complete a 12-month work period after finishing the first semester of the program. Students will need to be registered as a Truck & Coach apprentice with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities and be a member-in-good standing with the Ontario College of Trades during this one-year paid work period. Immediately following the work period, students will return to the college to complete Levels 1 & 2 of the apprenticeship in-school curriculum for the Truck & Coach Technician trade. On successful completion of these components students will be awarded an Ontario College Certificate.
Graduates will have the ability to identify, inspect and test basic truck system problems and components. Alternatively, graduates may resume their studies in a Motive Power Technician college program with advanced standing.

Note re: Admission RequirementsParticipants in the ITEP program MUST be registered apprentices through an International Truck dealer or affiliate.
- An academic strength is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.
- Ten (10) additional marks are added to each Advanced level, OAC, U, U/C, and post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.
- A sound mathematical and English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the admission selection process. Minimum cutoffs apply.
- Students are required to provide their own CSA-approved footwear, safety glasses, and specified hand tools. The College provides all other tools required. The list of required tools is provided to students at the start of the program. Conestoga College International Technical Education program coveralls are mandatory and will be supplied (on loan) by Navistar Canada for use during the program.

Pathways & Credit TransferConestoga pathways enable students to build on their academic achievements in order to earn a degree or additional credential. Pathways are formed through agreements between Conestoga programs or partner institutions.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, formal and informal education, non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measurable at the required academic level and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student's Conestoga transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies, to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.

Description: This course emphasizes the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and activities required in order to identify appropriate and rewarding employment opportunities and to participate in the typical job search process for entry-level roles. Students will learn to evaluate their skills in order to develop self-marketing techniques such as cover letters, resumes, and outlining achievements. Mock interviews will provide the student with interview experience as well as feedback on their strengths and areas to be improved.

Description: This course focuses on the reading, writing and critical thinking skills needed for academic and workplace success. Students will analyse, summarize, and discuss a variety of readings and apply the steps of planning, writing, and revising in response to written prompts. This course prepares students for post-secondary writing tasks, research, and documentation.
Description: This course will introduce students to the use of word processing and spreadsheet software program, as well as, operating systems and the Web to produce technical documents.
Description: This course is an applications oriented mathematics course in which the student utilizes arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry and geometry to solve technically oriented problems. This course is designed to develop a proficiency in mathematics necessary for subsequent courses in the Motive Power trades. The course covers both vocational (job oriented) and generic skills (written, analytical and problem-solving).

Description: Review safe working practices, housekeeping, hazard awareness, the use of personal protective equipment, safety legislation and regulations, WHMIS.
Description: This course is designed to allow the Motive Power student to use precision measuring tools in trade related problems.

Description: This course will cover a basic understanding of the electrical flow and sources and a basic understanding of schematic interpretation and trade symbol usage.
|TRCK1110||Introduction to Truck and Coach Service
Description: The student will be given an overview of Truck and Coach systems, plus the operation and interpretation of precision measuring tools and meters. Basic function and usage of trade related hand and power tools. A basic understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic operations in an applicable trade format will be covered. A major component of this course will deal with part and component identification and location.
|WELD1610||Welding for Motive Power
Description: The students will learn the fundamentals of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes as well as oxy-fuel welding and cutting. Topics will include safe operating principles, applications, equipment setup and troubleshooting.

Description: Demonstrate a basic working knowledge of the construction, operating principles, testing and servicing of electrical system circuits and components, light and heavy duty lead acid batteries, gasoline fuel systems, intake and exhaust systems and emission control systems; demonstrate a basic working knowledge of the design, layout and interpretation of electrical system wiring diagrams.

Description: Demonstrate a working knowledge of electrical definitions and fundamentals of applied test equipment; the construction, operating principles, testing and servicing of the following: heavy duty batteries, heavy duty cranking systems and control circuits; charging systems and control circuits, heavy duty electrical circuit schematics, auxiliary electrical components, electronic fundamentals, and electronic input circuit components.

Description: Demonstrate a working knowledge of the construction, operating principles, testing and servicing of; clutch and flywheel assemblies, multiple countershaft manual transmissions and auxiliary sections, multiple speed and double reduction drive axle assemblies, power divider tandem drive assemblies, electronically controlled standard transmissions, and transfer cases drop boxes and power take-off assemblies.

Description: Demonstrate a working knowledge of the construction, operating principles, testing and servicing of air brake systems, hydraulic and air-over-hydraulic brakes, tire and wheel assemblies, wheel end assemblies, mechanical suspension systems, and air suspension systems.
|TRCK1260||Vehicle Electronic Management and Emission Systems
Description: Demonstrate a working knowledge of electronic service tools, vehicle computer fundamentals and electronic input circuit components.
Description: Students will be given access to the Navistar web-based self study system for this course. They will complete a series of modules on International technical processes and procedures, safety, ISIS, iKnow programs, servicemaxx, warranty, electrical systems basics, power steering, air suspension, fluid analysis, pre-delivery inspection, and Diamond Logic.
- Identify basic motive power system problems by using critical thinking skills and strategies and by applying fundamental knowledge of truck and coach operation, components, and their interrelationships.
- Identify, inspect, and test basic truck and coach engine components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
- Identify, inspect, and test basic truck and coach electrical, electronic, and emission components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
- Identify, inspect, and test basic truck and coach drive train components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
- Identify, inspect, and test basic truck and coach suspension, steering, and brake components and systems in compliance with manufacturers' recommendations.
- Disassemble and assemble components to required specifications by applying workshop skills and knowledge of basic shop practices.
- Use a variety of test equipment to assess basic electronic circuits, vehicle systems, and subsystems in trucks and coaches.
- Apply basic knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics to the testing and inspection of basic motive power systems and subsystems.
- Communicate information effectively, credibly, and accurately by producing supporting documentation to appropriate standards.
- Use information technology and computer skills to access data concerning repair procedures and manufacturers' updates.
- Prepare logs, records, and documentation to appropriate standards.
- Apply business practices and communication skills to improve customer service.
- Develop and use personal and professional strategies and plans to improve professional growth, job performance, and work relationships.
- Complete all assigned work in compliance with occupational, health, safety, and environmental law; established policies and procedures; codes and regulations; and in accordance with ethical principles.
- Perform soldering operations, welding and cutting using oxy-fuel and welding using GMAW.
