About the Program

This unique 32-week program provides the student an introduction to a variety of trade-specific skills in the construction field with each component running 8-16 weeks in duration. Students study and practice in trade-specific areas comprising plumbing, gas, welding, HVAC and electrical. The program provides students with safety training (general and specific) and skills development in a number of construction areas. There is an opportunity via academic upgrading to strengthen math and communication skills outside of program hours. \

Financial Assistance

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a needs-based program designed to help Ontario students cover the cost of post-secondary education. Graduate Opportunities

Graduate opportunities exist in various construction jobs, including apprenticeship positions in the disciplines of study. Construction opportunities exist in residential and the ICI (industrial, commercial and institutional) sectors. Entry-level positions often lead to an apprenticeship (i.e., carpenter, cabinetmaker, plumber, brick and stone mason, roofer, tile setter, electrician, HVAC specialist, tinsmith, gas technician, welder, construction craft worker and many other apprenticeships in the construction industry) or with further training to becoming a skilled craftsperson (i.e., decorator, painter, wall or floor coverer, trim, drywall or plaster specialist).

100% of 2013-2014 graduates found employment within 6 months of graduation.

Pathways & Credit Transfer

Conestoga pathways enable students to build on their academic achievements in order to earn a degree or additional credential. Pathways are formed through agreements between Conestoga programs or partner institutions.

Often applicants have earned credits from another college or university that may allow a student to be granted advanced standing or exemption. Learn more about credit transfer opportunities at Conestoga.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, formal and informal education, non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measurable at the required academic level and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student's Conestoga transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies, to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.

Description: Using Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code, study the materials and methods used in the construction of residential roof framing

CARP1550 Hoisting and Rigging

Description: Students will learn the theory and practice associated with the safe storage, handling and connecting of propane cylinders commonly found on a construction site whether they be used as an energy source for fork lifts or as a heat source.
In addition, students will study and practice how to safely work at heights using ladders, travel and fall restraint gear. Training in the required guard rails and safety requirements when working in elevated work areas will also be addressed as well as the requirement to work effectively with team members.

CARP1560 General Carpentry for GAS II

Description: During the install of gas appliances, bathroom fixtures, kitchen remodels and various renovations to existing structures a particular set of carpentry based skills are required to address changes to the roof and associated components.
In this course, for example, the students will learn how to shingle, prepare a roof surface and apply flashing when roofing, installing vents, masts and other components on a roof. Students will practice caulking, sealing, working with ridge caps and various roofing materials. This course is a combination of theory and demonstrated practice on the job site (lab). Students will be expected to interact with others in a professional manner consistent with industry best practices.

COMM1085 College Reading & Writing Skills

Description: This course focuses on the reading, writing and critical thinking skills needed for academic and workplace success. Students will analyse, summarize, and discuss a variety of readings and apply the steps of planning, writing, and revising in response to written prompts. This course prepares students for post-secondary writing tasks, research, and documentation.

COMP1195 Computer Applications

Description: The student will demonstrate proficiency in the use of an internet browser, and computer file management system. Additionally, the student will create documentation, to industry standards, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings using various software applications.

MECH1710 HVAC Mechanical System Theory

Description: In this course students will be introduced to the characteristics, properties, basic fundamentals, and safety aspects associated with natural gas and propane. Students will also receive a basic introduction relating to air conditioning and refrigeration systems. As part of this course students will study the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) and how these safety systems apply to HVAC.

MECH1720 HVAC Mechanical System Practice

Description: In this course students will be introduced to the various methods of installing gas fired appliances, as per current codes and regulations. Students will identify the different testing methods for carbon monoxide and gas leaks. Students will identify and select the appropriate tools for the safe installation of natural gas and propane piping systems. Students will participate “hands on” in making tubing connection, piping threading, projects on flaring, swaging and tube bending from data on mechanical drawings and will be expected to identify, care for, and safely use hand tools.

WELD1560 Welding I for Construction

Description: This unit will enable the student to explain the construction, operation, assembly and disassembly of oxyacetylene equipment and accessories and of oxyacetylene cutting and welding theory and practice. It will also enable the student to use oxyacetylene equipment to make 90 deg cuts, lay beads and weld mild steel butt joints, lap, tee and V joints in flat position.

WELD1570 Welding II for Construction

Description: This course will introduce the student to the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. Theory class will cover the safe set up and working practices as well as the fundamental concepts of the SMAW process. The shop component will see the student apply safe working practices along with skills development in the SMAW process. Students will practice the butt, lap and t-joint on mild steel and learn about the required equipment and demonstrate proper and safe set up procedures.

CONS1290 Hazard Awareness (Plumbing) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Description: This safety course expands on other safety course(s) but specializes in safety on a job site. This course is taught with a plumbing slant; however, the safety skills are transferable to any trades, crafts or labour jobs on a construction site. The student will be aware of and demonstrate knowledge of working with fluids and gases under pressure, working in poor weather conditions and safety practices associated with working with wet equipment. The student will also be aware of the requirements as set down in the Health and Safety Act. This course is a combination of theory and demonstrated practice on the job site (lab).

ELEC1800 Residential Electrical Theory

Description: This course will introduce basic electrical concepts including current, voltage, resistance and power, and how they apply to series and parallel circuits. Students will also be shown basic electrical schematics and drawings, and explore how they apply to a residential installation.

ELEC1810 Residential Electrical Practice

Description: In this course, students will have an opportunity to install various residential devices and practice residential wiring techniques. The students will also have the opportunity to install basic electrical circuits, and various wiring methods. An emphasis will be placed on the proper and safe use of tools and testing equipment, as well as standard safety procedures.

PLMB1060 Plumbing Theory

Description: This course consists of all the necessary subjects that are required to have a general knowledge of plumbing systems. The students will learn the basics of using trade related tools and materials in conjunction with applicable codes, construction drawings, and safe working practices. The students will be able to apply their knowledge to various individual lab projects and a group project constructing a typical residential bathroom rough-in. This group project will exercise effective communication and problem-solving skills, as well as proper installation practices and selection of materials in accordance with plumbing code requirements. The project will expose the student to some of the tasks that a first year plumber apprentice would encounter on a jobsite.

PLMB1070 Plumbing Practice

Description: This course will allow the students to practice work typically done by first year plumbing apprentices. The students will learn how to select materials and equipment for a residential plumbing system including fixtures and will install from specifications and blueprints a complete bathroom group using trade related math, effective communications skills, appropriate codes, hand tools, power tools and safe working practices.
