About the Program

Do you like to figure out how to make things better? Would you like to help increase profitability in a company? Then Supply Chain and Operations Management may be for you!

The three-year Business Administration - Supply Chain and Operations Management program prepares students for a successful career in the growing, dynamic, and underserviced-field of supply chain management. In Canada's supply chain sector there is a greater demand for skilled graduates than there are graduates available.

A supply chain describes the flow of goods, services and information from suppliers to the final customer. In today's business environment, companies no longer compete against companies; supply chains compete against supply chains. In the program, students develop the necessary knowledge and skills to manage and coordinate the supply chain activities required to produce and deliver all the goods and services we use every day.

The central theme of this program is continuous improvement, a key element in being competitive in a global market. Graduates of the program will receive a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate, endorsed by High Performance Solutions Inc. This program is also fully accredited by the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC).

This program also takes a hands-on, project-oriented approach and provides opportunities to work with current business and industry partners. Instructors are experts in their disciplines, often using an interactive approach to enrich the learning environment. This approach benefits our graduates finding employment in public and private sector organizations in areas such as purchasing, logistics, project management, distribution, planning, scheduling, system implementation, and many more.

Alliances with professional associations; including the Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA), APICS (a professional association for Supply Chain and Operations Management) and the Ontario Public Buyers Association (OPBA) affords students the opportunity to network with professionals and achieve the APICS CPIM professional designation while at school.

Financial Assistance

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a needs-based program designed to help Ontario students cover the cost of post-secondary education. Funded by the federal and provincial governments, OSAP is intended to promote equality of opportunity for post-secondary studies through direct financial assistance for educational costs and living expenses. Co-op Information

Graduate Opportunities

Graduates are eligible for acceptance into the Certified Supply Chain Management Professional (CSCMP) Designation graduate program, administered by the Supply Chain Management Association Ontario (SCMAO).

  • The Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council recently released their 2012 HR Study Update identifying future personnel needs within the sector. Highlights are as follows:

    • The Canadian supply chain industry employs in excess of 767,200 workers.
    • Future employment opportunities are favourable given a currently high vacancy rate and the prospect of a large proportion of the workforce approaching retirement age.
    • To keep pace with anticipated growth and to replace retiring workers, the sector anticipates the need to hire almost 66,000 individuals annually.


100% of 2013-2014 graduates found employment within 6 months of graduation.

Pathways & Credit Transfer

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, formal and informal education, non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measurable at the required academic level and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student's Conestoga transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies, to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.

Description: The purpose of the course is to provide the student with a mathematical basis for personal and business financial decisions through four instructional models. The course stresses business application using arithmetic, algebra, ratio-proportion and graphing. Applications include payroll, cost-volume-profit analysis and merchandising mathematics. Description: This course is a study of what people think, feel and do in and around organizations. The course examines the behaviour of individuals working alone or in teams and the thought processes and structural contexts surrounding these actions. In conjunction with actual work place examples, it examines how factors which influence individual and team behaviour, ultimately affect organizational effectiveness. The ability to manage upwards and downwards effectively will allow individuals to become better leaders in their organizations. Description: This course is a study of the Canadian economy as a whole. Description: This mandatory course prepares students for job searching for their co-op work terms and for post-graduate careers. Students will reflect on their skills, attitudes, and expectations and evaluate and interpret available opportunities in the workplace. Self-marketing techniques using resumes, cover letters, cold-calls, and interviewing will be learned and students will learn the expectations, rules, and regulations that apply in the workplace with regards to social, organizational, ethical, and safety issues while developing an awareness of self-reflective practice.

Description: This course will explore the fundamentals of project management in order to provide the student with a solid foundation in this discipline. Description: The function of master planning is to bring customer demands and supply realities into balance. Description: This course concentrates on advanced MS Excel spreadsheet and MS Access database management techniques. OPER2210 Material Requirements Planning Concepts

Description: In this course, the student will learn the fundamental concepts of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP). Students will develop the ability and tools necessary to apply these concepts to plan manufactured, purchased and finished goods inventory in a manual environment. Problem solving techniques will be used to propose solutions to changes in the plan to provide the best solution for an organization. Students will also learn how Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) impacts these processes and decisions in an organization.

OPER2240 Public Purchasing

Description: Although purchasing is a process, based upon fundamental principles and best practices, there are some very unique differences between public and private sectors. While industrial, commercial and retail buying is directly linked to the generation of profit, public buying enables the delivery of satisfaction to all citizens and the fulfillment of public policy. This is further linked through political direction to influence socio-economic needs, with trade agreements, at all domestic and international levels. Therefore, the content of this course is designed to help the purchasing professional better understand the nature of public buying and the very different drivers which are leading the strategic directions of their organization.

Description: During this course, students will study the principles, concepts, and techniques used by supply chain professionals to prioritize, schedule, control, and evaluate the effectiveness of execution systems. Description: This course allows the student to apply in a lab environment the fundamental concepts, principles and techniques of a user of a computerized material requirements planning (MRP) system. The course will provide the student with an understanding of where MRP is employed in the Business Planning Cycle and the key issues regarding the effective use of the MRP system to maximize customer service, minimize inventory investment, improve cash flow, and improve profits. The course will emphasize use in a job shop environment, then apply the necessary system updates required to move to a JIT planning environment.

Student development will be evaluated during and at the conclusion of the work experience.

Description: The theme of this course is continuous improvement. Laws and regulations that effect transportation are examined to see what impact they have. OPER3225 Applied Execution and Control of Operations

Description: The purpose of this capstone course is to provide a “hands-on experience” in the designing, programming and application of a computerized capacity planning of resources – based on comprehensive and interactive systems of Inventory Control, Materials Requirements Planning, Capacity Requirements Planning, Shop Calendar, Item Master File, Master Production Schedule, Bills of Materials, Work Center and Routing Files, and Open Order Files. In this course students will use advanced MS Excel functions and tools to build a functioning Resource Planning System.

OPER3235 Value Stream Mapping

Description: In this capstone course students learn to identify cost areas in products and services. They will also practice innovative thinking to develop cost reduction ideas which will add value to the product while maintaining or improving quality and reliability. This capstone course requires the student to apply most of the subjects taught in all three years, particularly Purchasing, Accounting, Costing, Project Management, Manufacturing Processes, and Print Interpretation.
Students who successfully complete this course and OPER3210 Lean Concepts and Continuous Improvement may qualify for Six Sigma Yellow belt certification.
