Electronics Engineering Technician (Optional Co-op)

About the Program

This highly practical program starts out general in nature and allows students to specialize in the second year to ensure graduates have access to job opportunities in a variety of areas. As a student in this program you will gain a diverse knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of the principles of electricity, analog systems, digital systems including microprocessors, programmable logic controllers, process control of systems and electronic communication systems. The student will learn to organize, set priorities, and efficiently extract information from a variety of sources. The majority of courses are in a lecture/lab format with practical instruction taking place in newly equipped laboratories. Through a variety of exercises, you will develop the communication skills that today's successful technician needs. This two year program will quickly prepare you for a rewarding career in the industrial work place.

Graduates completing this program are automatically eligible for associate membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT), as well as any similar association in Canada.

Note: Students with MAP4C will be considered for admission via the Technology Foundations program

Co-op Information

  • Once students are in the program, they are considered for the Co-op format based on their college academic performance.
  • There are limited Co-op seats available.
  • To ensure successful completion of your program, it may be necessary to relocate or commute during Co-op work terms.
  • Co-operative Education features four academic terms in college and four terms in business and industry.

Admission Requirements

  • All applicants apply to the Non Co-op option. Applications to transfer to Co-op are processed during subsequent semesters.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.
  • Grade 12 compulsory English, C or U, or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Communications (COMM 1270).
  • Grade 12 Mathematics, C or U (MCT4C, MHF4U, MCV4U) or equivalent, or Conestoga College Preparatory Mathematics For Technology & Apprenticeship (MATH1385)

    o Applicants with MAP4C or MDM4U will only be considered after writing the college Math Admissions test. (Minimum grade cut-offs will apply)

Note:

  • English and/or mathematics testing may be required.
  • Applicants not meeting the math admission requirements will be contacted to arrange for testing to assess mathematical ability.

Admission Requirements for Co-op Option

  • Students interested in applying for Co-op will be required to achieve a straight pass on all courses in Semester 1 with a minimum combined average of 80% for the following core courses: Digital Fundamentals, Electrical Fundamentals, and Instrumentation and Measurement.

Admission Procedures

  • Academic strength is calculated by averaging all submitted senior level secondary school marks or test results (or equivalent) of the required subjects.
  • Ten (10) additional marks are added to each Advanced level, OAC, U, U/C course used in the calculation of academic strength.
  • Twenty (20) additional marks are added to each post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.
  • A sound mathematical background is important for success in this program and is considered during the admission selection process. Minimum cutoffs apply.

Note:

  • Grade 11 Physics or Science or Conestoga College Preparatory Physics, technical shops/labs, technical drafting, electricity, electronics are desirable but not mandatory.
  • Applicants are assumed to have basic computer literacy.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Adults with significant life and work experience may receive credits toward a college certificate or diploma program through an assessment process. The learning may have taken place through employment, non-credit courses, independent study, conferences and seminars or volunteer activities. Prior learning must be measurable at the college level and meet Conestoga's standards of achievement for current courses. Evaluation is done through a challenge exam or portfolio development. Successful completion results in a credit on a Conestoga College transcript.
