Woodworking Technology - Architectural Millwork (Co-op)

About the Program

This unique program is designed to provide students with theoretical and applied knowledge of the technology and skills involved in the efficient and quality conscious design, manufacture and installation of architectural millwork.

Students will be provided with practical skills in product development, machining and finishing an installation of architectural products such as trim, paneling, doors, windows, stairs, cabinets and ornamental work. In the second year of the program, students will continue their development of practical shop skills and begin to learn the production management and industrial engineering concepts consistent with current technology. Computer and CNC machining skills are developed.

The third year of the program allows students to understand and apply the principles of work measurement, methods analysis, plant layout and support systems, material handling, quality control and cost estimating. Students will gain knowledge of manufacturing management techniques such as production planning and scheduling and personnel management and supervision, including practical supervisory assignments. Concepts in computer-integrated manufacturing, computer-assisted drafting, CNC program processing and other computer applications in the woodworking industry such as inventory control and costing will be studied.

All courses in first level are common with Woodworking Technician program and most courses for the remainder of the program are common with the Woodworking Technology Co-op program.

Co-op Information

  • Co-operative Education features six academic terms in college and three work terms in the woodworking industry.
  • To ensure successful completion of your program, it may be necessary to relocate or commute during co-op work terms.
  • Students registered in the Woodworking Technology - Architectural Millwork (Co-op) program must achieve a 75% academic average during semester one to be eligible to continue in semester two of the Co-op program.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.
  • Grade 12 compulsory English, C or U, or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Communications (COMM1270).
  • Grade 12 Mathematics, C or U, or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Mathematics For Trades (MATH1420).

Note:

  • English and/or mathematics testing may be required.

Admission Procedures

  • Academic strength is calculated by averaging all submitted senior level secondary school marks or test results (or equivalent) of the required subjects.
  • Ten (10) additional marks are added to each Advanced level, OAC, U, U/C course used in the calculation of academic strength.
  • Twenty (20) additional marks are added to each post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.

Note:

  • Grade 11 Physics or Science or Conestoga College Preparatory Physics, technical shops/labs, technical drafting and basic computer literacy are desirable but not mandatory.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Adults with significant life and work experience may receive credits toward a college certificate or diploma program through an assessment process. The learning may have taken place through employment, non-credit courses, independent study, conferences and seminars or volunteer activities. Prior learning must be measurable at the college level and meet Conestoga's standards of achievement for current courses. Evaluation is done through a challenge exam or portfolio development. Successful completion results in a credit on a Conestoga College transcript.
