About the Program

The field of career development is evolving and expanding today, enabling practitioners to work in a variety of roles. This program is designed for individuals who are or would like to work in roles such as career counselors, employment counselors, career information practitioners, career development practitioners or job developers.

Skills acquired in the program may offer career mobility to graduates who wish to serve a broader variety of client groups, attain more in-depth competencies in selected areas of specialization, or who may wish to assume more proactive management roles, strategies, and choices in their current professional setting.

The skills and knowledge taught in this program include:
- Individual counselling and group facilitation.
- Theoretical models of career development.
- Future trends analysis in relation to career development.
- The tools, techniques and processes of career counseling.
- Assessment in career counseling.
- Electronic tools and techniques.
- Working with diverse populations and equity issues, and Consulting skills for career development practitioners.

Admission Requirements

  • Diploma or degree from an accredited College or University, OR a Career Foundations Program certificate.

Note:

  • Applicants possessing degrees/diplomas from institutions where the language of instruction was not English will be required to provide test scores as evidence of their English language proficiency. Test scores, if required, would be a minimum of TOEFL 580 or 237 computer-based or 92 internet-based with TWE 4.5, IELTS 6.5 with no bands less than 6.0, CAEL 70 with no sub-test band scores less than 60, or equivalent scores in other recognized standard tests of English.
  • We offer a language program for students whose English language skills are below the standard required for admission but all other admission criteria have been met. You will be eligible for admission to the post-graduate program after completion of level 4 of the General Arts and Science - English Language Studies (ELS) program with an overall grade average of 80% and no grade less than 75%. Your placement in the ELS program is determined by scores on an in-house English language test or TOEFL or IELTS.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have:
    • Post-secondary subjects in human development, psychology and/or sociology.
    • Previous paid or voluntary experience in a related field such as career/employment counselling, human resources, and/or life skills coaching.

Admission Procedures

  • Submit proof of Admission Requirements.
  • Qualified applicants will be contacted and requested to submit:
    • Current resume.
    • A letter of application.
  • Final acceptance is based on a review of the academic background, resume and letter of application.

Note:

  • Applicants who are offered admissions with the Career Foundations certificate will be granted exceptions for applicable courses.
  • Working knowledge of current computer operating systems, office software and an Internet Browser as well as access to a personal computer and an Internet service account are required.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Adults with significant life and work experience may receive credits toward a college certificate or diploma program through an assessment process. The learning may have taken place through employment, non-credit courses, independent study, conferences and seminars or volunteer activities. Prior learning must be measurable at the college level and meet Conestoga's standards of achievement for current courses. Evaluation is done through a challenge exam or portfolio development. Successful completion results in a credit on a Conestoga College transcript.
