About the Program

Entrepreneurship is one of Canada's most sought-after career options. This Small Business Ventures graduate certificate program will help students start up and manage a successful business. This unique program is delivered by an experienced, creative and passionate team of teachers and successful entrepreneurs. Courses utilize a variety of useful tools and strategies to help build a new venture. Class size is limited to 20 participants to ensure high levels of interaction and customized business coaching and mentoring. The Small Business Ventures program operates in the Centre for Entrepreneurship (C4E), with all classes in the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Ventures Lab. To help support a successful launch, students will have access to professional advisors and the business incubator throughout the program and up to six months after graduation.

Financial Assistance

The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a needs-based program designed to help Ontario students cover the cost of post-secondary education. Funded by the federal and provincial governments, OSAP is intended to promote equality of opportunity for post-secondary studies through direct financial assistance for educational costs and living expenses. These interest-free loans are intended to supplement your financial resources and those of your family. The majority of students apply for loan assistance via the OSAP website. Graduate Opportunities

Graduates are primarily oriented toward starting a business venture or managing a small- to medium-sized business operation. The program is also ideally suited for individuals who operate a family enterprise. Some graduates may want to apply their entrepreneurial knowledge and skills in larger, established organizations, including for-profit and not-for-profit or social enterprises. All participants are eligible to receive the $1,000 RBC Venture Award upon successful completion of Level 1 courses. The award, provided by RBC Royal Bank, is to be utilized for the New Venture Project in Level 2.

Pathways & Credit Transfer

Conestoga pathways enable students to build on their academic achievements in order to earn a degree or additional credential. Pathways are formed through agreements between Conestoga programs or partner institutions. View the transfer agreement opportunities for this program.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, formal and informal education, non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measurable at the required academic level and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student's Conestoga transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies, to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.

Description: This highly interactive course introduces you to the creative world of entrepreneurship. You will participate in a variety of practical activities through which you will explore your entrepreneurial characteristics, use the Business Model Canvas to map out a business idea, assess the opportunity, assemble resources, and refine your idea in preparation to develop a business plan for a new venture.

ENTR8115 Venture Finance 1

Description: Financial planning and management are challenges faced by many entrepreneurs. This course will introduce you to key concepts of accounting and financial management such as cash flow, record keeping, and sources of financing for start-up and growth. In addition, you will examine issues associated with the financial management of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), including the unique challenges faced by family businesses. Financing of growth, including leasing, franchise financing, and venture capital will also be covered.

ENTR8120 Marketing and New Media

Description: Marketing is about creating value for customers and building strong customer relationships in order to capture value from customers in return. Effective marketing cannot only determine the success of a venture, but also its rate of growth and profitability. In this course, you will apply fundamental marketing theories and concepts, including the impact and use of new media marketing vehicles such as the internet and social media to develop a marketing strategy.

ENTR8140 Sales and Client Relationship Management

Description: Acquiring and satisfying customers forms the basis on which an entrepreneurial venture is successful. Marketing attracts customers, and selling is the process which results in an exchange of funds for a product and/or service. This course focuses on identifying the various selling structures, methods, and techniques which an entrepreneur can employ to successfully generate revenue, including modern e-business. Additionally, this course examines techniques to ensure recurring revenue through effective customer relationship management.

ENTR8150 Managing Compliance

Description: Every business has to understand and be compliant with laws and legislation at the municipal, provincial, federal, and industry level, in order to be successful in both the short and long term. Consequences of non-compliance can result in the failure of the firm and other legal implications for the entrepreneur. On the other hand, compliance to requirements can often be a competitive advantage. A number of applied approaches are used in this course, including cases and a research project to develop and apply knowledge of requirements for small business compliance. You will develop business policies and procedures to ensure compliance requirements for a proposed venture.

ENTR8160 Operations Management for Small Business

Description: Throughout this course, the student will learn the process of operations planning and management. Special emphasis will be placed on considerations for introducing a new business venture to the marketplace. Students will research and analyze the various influences of behavior in order to maximize relationships and output in a business venture. Students will gain an understanding of the development and utilization of strategies for continuous improvement of both quality and productivity in businesses involved in manufacturing, retail and service sectors.

ENTR8220 Market Research for New Ventures

Description: This marketing research course will explore research tools and techniques needed to execute a marketing research for a new business venture. Emphasis will be on how marketing research fits into the strategic planning process; conducting situation analyses and exploratory research; identifying and locating sources of secondary data including Internet and other online resources; evaluating and selecting appropriate methods for conducting primary research; designing data gathering tools; conducting effective survey fieldwork; and tabulating, analyzing and reporting of research findings.

ENTR8135 The Entrepreneurial Leader

Description: Successful entrepreneurs instill their personality and beliefs into the fabric of their organization. Entrepreneurs in democratic societies are often role models for being good and caring citizens. Taking responsibility for helping society above and beyond the narrow confines of an entrepreneurial venture has real business benefits beyond the value of "feeling good". Network extension, visible evidence of integrity, and discovery of new supply and demand chains are but a few of the benefits that an entrepreneurial citizen can achieve. This course will challenge you to become leaders in shaping socially responsible businesses and building a civil society through examination of emerging theory and practice, analysis of cases, and a social enterprise project.

ENTR8185 Business Growth and Market Expansion

Description: Many entrepreneurial opportunities are achieved by taking over a family firm from the previous generation or purchasing an existing business from owners who are interested in selling due to retirement or other reasons. These situations have a great degree of commonality from the entrepreneur's perspective, because they are both succession scenarios where the business changes ownership. This course is designed to enhance awareness of the significance, diversity, and complexity of succession planning. It develops an understanding of the distinctive advantages and challenges of family firms, enhancing the ability to develop strategic solutions to improve the performance of these firms. These same principles are also important to understand when purchasing an entrepreneurial firm which is not family owned because the basic dynamics and issues are often similar. A major mistake many entrepreneurs make is failing to plan how to exit their business; therefore, students will develop a succession plan which captures the value of the enterprise.

ENTR8195 New Venture Project

Description: Once a new venture has been developed, the hard work of execution begins. Successful business plan execution requires a disciplined approach with clearly defined objectives, deliverables, activities, milestones, accountability, budgets, timelines and results. The New Venture Project is an opportunity to integrate learning from across the program. You will work one-on-one with a faculty advisor/ business coach to develop and implement a New Venture Execution Strategy. You will also utilize the collective brainpower and experience of your team of business advisors, including a lawyer, accountant and financial advisor.

ENTR8210 Venture Finance 2

Description: Financial planning and management are challenges faced by many entrepreneurs. Accessing funds to start or grow a business is often a major issue. In this course, you will prepare and analyze pro forma balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements for a new business venture. Additionally, you will determine start-up costs and sources of financing for a new business venture. The course covers the supply of bank credit to small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) as well as government initiatives to assist small businesses. In addition, you will examine issues associated with the financial management of small businesses, including financing growth and accessing venture capital.

Program Advisory Committees

The College appoints Program Advisory Committee members for diploma, degree, certificate and apprenticeship programs. Committees are composed of employers, practitioners and recent program graduates. College representatives (students, faculty, and administrators) are resource persons. Each committee advises the Board on the development of new programs, the monitoring of existing programs and community acceptance of programs.
