About the program

This program will prepare students to work with software essentials used in the field of graphic design. Students will discover the key to elements of good print-based design, through a combination of theory and hands-on practice, using industry standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite. Successful completion of the program will enable students to produce professional, print-based publications, including brochures, newspapers, magazines, and books.

All courses must be completed within 5 years of acceptance into the program.

Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older

Note re: admission requirements

  • Students must be able to receive instruction, respond and research in the English language.

  • Submit a completed Conestoga College Program Application Form.

Program outcomes

  • Import and open photographic images and illustrations with the appropriate graphics software.
  • Use and control menu and palettes or panels in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Describe the limitations of photographic computer images in terms of final printing processes
  • Describe the differences between images prepared for print, multimedia, and web use.
  • Utilize Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop effectively, recognizing the specific features, strengths and weaknesses of each.
  • Create and edit a multi page document with multiple text and graphic elements:
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency and design skills using Adobe Illustrator
  • Design and execute comprehensive artwork using Adobe Illustrator
  • Present ideas and rationale for design solutions
  • Apply basic concepts in design, including balance, emphasis, rhythm, unity, positive and negative space
  • Utilize other design building blocks, including typography, graphics, and colour
  • Describe the typical workflow of a design project including how to get ideas and write a design brief.
  • Complete design projects including logos and promotional materials
