About the ProgramThis program will emphasize the importance of tactical and practical security solutions and the strategic assessment of risk factors for their control and management. The program provides current, industry-specific, and highly relevant training for individuals who are seeking employment in the field of security services, individuals who are on a career pathway to inspections, investigations, or law enforcement related duties or individuals who are currently employed as security guards and wish to expand their security and enforcement knowledge and skill-set. Participants will set themselves apart from others in the field through this specialized training. Participants will complete most of their courses online in any order that they wish.
Program InformationAll courses must be completed within 3 years of acceptance into the program.
Admission RequirementsOntario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.
Note re: Admission RequirementsProspective students are advised that to work in Ontario as a security guard they must have completed the required training and/or testing, be at least 18 years old, possess a clean criminal record, according to the Clean Criminal Record Regulation, and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Submit a completed Conestoga College Program Application Form.
- Attach proof of Admission Requirements.
- Final selection is made following an assessment of the admission requirements.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, formal and informal education, non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measurable at the required academic level and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and portfolio development are the primary methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful completion of the assessment results in an official course credit that will be recorded on the student's Conestoga transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies, to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.

- Recognize and apply the basic principles of crime prevention through environmental design;
- Describe the various roles in protection, security and investigation with emphasis on public, personal, and corporate safety and explain the major components of enforcement through the courts and correctional services;
- Assess and evaluate potential risks of all forms to an organization or business by employing critical and analytic thinking;

|CRIM1010||Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
Description: The course focusses on crime prevention through environmental design or CPTED as it is commonly known. This proactive design philosophy is built around a core set of principles that embody the belief that the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the incidence of crime. Students who complete this course successfully will also receive additional certification in CPTED. |HEAL1810||Mental Health First Aid
Description: Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved. This course aims to improve mental health literacy, and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or a colleague.
Anyone can benefit from MHFA training. It is open to members of the general public. Families affected by mental health problems, teachers, health service providers, emergency workers, frontline workers who deal with the public, volunteers, human resources professionals, employers and community groups are just a few of the groups who have benefited from MHFA.
|LAW1060||Canadian Criminal Justice System
Description: This course provides an overview of the Canadian Criminal Justice System with a particular emphasis on the history, function, role and organization of Canadian law enforcement services. It will examine the major components of the criminal justice system from enforcement through the courts to correctional services.
|SECU1040||Security Guard Licensing for Ontario
Description: This course is intended for new security guards and/or security guards who need to meet the training requirement to obtain an Ontario Security Guard License. This course contains 12 core modules as prescribed by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, including emergency first aid. This course includes exercises related to crime prevention through environmental design.
|SECU1050||Security, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness
Description: This course provides current best practices, industry-specific and highly-relevant training for individuals who are currently employed or are seeking employment in the field of disaster relief management. This course is designed to prepare students to act in coordination and collaboration as a team member with other emergency response personnel. Disaster/Emergency planning will be covered through six phases: security, mitigation, prevention, preparedness, response, restoration and recovery. Participants will set themselves apart from others in the field through this specialized training.
The College reserves the right to alter information including requirements and fees and to cancel at any time a program, course, or program major or option; to change the location and/or term in which a program or course is offered; to change the program curriculum as necessary to meet current competencies in the job market or for budgetary reasons; or to withdraw an offer of admission both prior to and after its acceptance by an applicant or student because of insufficient applications or registrations, over-acceptance of offers of admission, budgetary constraints, or for other such reasons. Students actively registered in cohort delivered programs who take longer than the designed program length of time to complete their studies are accountable for completing any new or additional courses that may result due to changes in the program of study. Unless otherwise stated, students registered in non-cohort delivered programs must complete the program of study within seven years of being admitted to the program.
