About the Program

The Medical Support Essentials Certificate of Achievement is designed to provide current administrative professionals, who have already attained a solid basis of medical terminology and medical conditions, with the basic administrative skills to support medical office routines. Students will be introduced to the basics of OHIP billing, patient scheduling and medical records management. Additionally, students will learn how to support patients during a variety of medical tests and develop a fundamental knowledge of pharmacology relevant to the role of the medical office administrator.

Administrative professionals who are interested in completing this certificate, but are not currently working in a medical office environment, are strongly recommended to complete the Medical Terminology Essentials Certificate of Achievement, prior to enrolling in this program.

Graduates of this certificate or those who currently work in healthcare may wish to expand their skillset and consider the Medical Transcription Essentials - Level One and Level Two Certificates of Achievements.They may also want to extend their learning in-class and transfer eligible credits* from these programs to the Medical Transcription Certificate and/or the Medical Office Practices Ontario College Certificate.When combined, all programs may offer professional administrators the opportunity to transition their skills to a variety of healthcare settings.

Description: Medical office procedures will cover administrative and clerical functions including patient reception, scheduling appointments appropriate to patient needs, telephone procedures, medical records management and charting of progress notes, verbal and non verbal communications with patients, computerization and the medical office, financial records, personal conduct, medical ethics and law. The Canada Health Act will be introduced as well as OHIP and the principles of OHIP medical billing.

Description: This course is designed to provide the student with the basic principles of efficient Health Claim Billing in Ontario. The student will learn how to use the Schedule of Benefits and Preambles of the Ministry of Health, as well as be introduced to computerized billing. Students require good typing skills and some computer knowledge.

Description: Designed for medical office professionals to assist in developing an understanding of common medical tests related to a wide variety of body systems. Knowledge in the area of medical testing will help students to educate the patient in relation to the description and purpose of the test, preparation of the patient before the test, with care during and after the test, and expected results. Risks, complications, and special concerns are covered.

Description: Recommended Prerequisite: Medical Terminology
This course has been designed for medical office professionals to assist in developing an understanding of common surgical procedures related to a wide variety of body systems. Knowledge in the area of surgical procedures will help the student to educate the patient prior to and after surgery, what to anticipate, and expected results. This course is open to people currently employed in health related areas or hope to do so in the future.
