The Office of Applied Research has developed the following policies and procedures to assist faculty, staff, students and visitors in the conduct of research. All research policies are reviewed and approved by the Research Board.

Applied Research Policy

This policy (pdf) defines the scope of applied research at the College and to whom it applies. It also outlines principles and guidelines for the conduct of research by Conestoga faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Communication Science to the Public: A Handbook for Researchers

This guide (pdf) is designed to make the time you have available for communication as productive as possible. In developing it, we sought advice from university communications directors, science reporters in print and electronic media and NSERC communications personnel. You will find plain English explanations of the fundamental principles of effective communication, as well as, practical activities to try – many of them suggested by NSERC researchers.

Conflict of Interest in Research

This policy (pdf) outlines situations that may constitute, or be perceived to constitute, a conflict of interest in research. Individuals should seek guidance from appropriate individuals before embarking on any activities which may raise conflict of interest questions.

Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans

This policy (pdf) outlines Conestoga's position on the use of human subjects (including human tissues and biological fluids) in research. Of utmost importance is the need to conduct human research in an ethical manner that both respects human dignity and ensures the welfare and integrity of the individual. Researchers who wish to conduct research using human subjects, whether on- or off-campus, must obtain ethical clearance prior to initiating the research. Integrity in Research

This policy (pdf) addresses concerns about responsibility and accountability in research. It outlines procedures for promoting integrity among researchers and for investigating allegations of misconduct in research as directed by the Tri-Council (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canadian Institutes of Health Research).

Research Administration and Policy Development

This policy (pdf) outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Office of Applied Research, the Associate Vice President (Applied Research), and the Research Board.

Research in the Yukon , NWT and Nunavut

Faculty who wish to conduct research in the Yukon , NWT and Nunavut must obtain a license prior to beginning their research. This policy (pdf) outlines the type of research that requires a license, and the process for obtaining such a license.

Research Intellectual Property Rights

This policy (pdf) outlines Conestoga's policy on ownership of research-related intellectual property. It covers issues of authorship, collaborative research, copyright, patents, revenue sharing and dispute resolution.

Research Involving Biohazards and Radioactive Materials

Prior to initiating research involving biohazards and/or radioactive materials, researchers must first obtain certification from the Vice President, Finance to ensure that the laboratory procedures being used comply with appropriate safety precautions. These include the procurement, use, level of containment, storage, transfer and disposal of biohazards and radioactive materials (pdf).

Student Rights in the Conduct of Research

This policy (pdf) outlines the rights of students involved in research with principal investigators, faculty, or staff. The principal investigator or supervisor is responsible for the supervision of students, and students are required to follow the research policies of the College.

Use of Animals in Research, Teaching and Testing

This policy (pdf) covers the use of animals, including all non-human living vertebrates and higher invertebrates as defined by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), in research. No research, teaching or testing involving animals may be undertaken by Conestoga faculty, staff, students or visitors.
