Preparing for the CELT
Knowing the format of the test is the first step towards being prepared. The CELT has four sections, each will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The sections are:
English Structure- This section contains an exercise in error correction, comprehension questions related to grammar, a verb tense exercise and sentence writing.
Reading- This section focuses on academic reading, definitions, comprehension questions as well as charts and a summary.
Writing- This section requires you to write a 200 - 300 word essay on a given topic.
Listening- This section contains an exercise in which you will respond to lecture questions for comprehension.
If you score Band 5 of higher, you will be contacted to take the speaking assessment to confirm whether college language requirements have been met. The speaking assessment will take 20 minutes.
Speaking- This section contains three parts. In part one, you will answer basic information questions. In part two, you will respond to questions related to a visual. In part three, you will respond to a prompt asking you to give your opinion on a current topic.
The CELT results are communicated via email or telephone within three business days.
