Exemption Testing - Apprentices & Non-Apprentices

Background

The Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) has appointed the community colleges with the administration of testing of apprentices and non-apprentices.

Apprentices may challenge within your community, the in-school portion of the three levels of the trade-specific apprenticeship program.  Non-apprentices can likewise challenge the in-school portion of the program starting first at Level One.

To obtain more information on Apprenticeship Exemption Test process and to book your exemption test please contact the Testing Centre at 519-748-5220, ext 2260

The Process

  • The tests are based on the formal instruction requirements for an apprenticeship program. These requirements are detailed in the Curriculum Standards documents developed by industry and trade instructors. You should obtain and review a copy of the trade specific standards before attempting any tests at the local office of the MTCU.
  • Exemption tests are to be written in sequential order, i.e. write and pass Level 1 before attempting Level 2.
  • Official letter outlining your results are sent to you within 10 working days.  If you fail to achieve the minimum pass (70%), you may rewrite the exemption test after 6 months. You may show evidence of having completed some preparatory work before rewriting the test. Information about Conestoga's Preparatory Programs is available at the School of Career and Academinc Access.
  • The college will also send a copy of the letter indicating your results to the MTCU – Apprenticeship and Client Services Office. If you are not already and apprentices, please note that this exemption is only valid for two years from the date of writing the examination. You may want to contact your apprenticeship branch field office to obtain more information on how to register as an apprentice.
