Make this Paris Travel Ad

This is to be a non-bleed, poster style, 7x10  print ad. We will use both PhotoShop and InDesign to create the ad. Normally we would use photos in TIFF format at high (300-600dpi) resolution for a print ad. The photo you are going to use is a lower resolution JPEG for fast download and quicker processing and printing time in InDesign

Open the Eiffel Tower picture from my web site and right click it to Save Picture As.. then save the picture to a known spot on your G: drive. At the same time get the Paris in the spring text file from my website and save it to the same place.

Open the picture in PhotoShop.( Note: if at some time you are working on an original photo, don't just save the image, save a copy as a TIFF). This will ensure that you have the original intact if you ever need it.

We want the picture to be exactly 7x10 so that it fits the ad without skewing so we are going to have to resize and crop the image. (7x10 is an industry standard non-bleed magazine ad size)

Open PhotoShop. Before you go further, select Edit>Preferences>Units &Rulers and change the Rulers, Width and Gutter dimensions to inches

Turn off Resample

Set the Document Size width to 7 inches.

You can only change one dimension of a photo. If you change both dimensions, the photo will skew and be out of proportion. In this case we make the width of the photo fit the width of the ad. (We don't set the height to 10" because that would make the width less than the 7" we require).

Now select the crop tool Notice that the tool data bar
has a place to enter Height and Width

Type in the required 7"x10"size and make sure to type in after the number to set the crop tool for inches. This automates the crop tool to exact size.

Now drag the crop tool over the picture from top left to bottom right. (Note that the window is automatically 7"x10"). You can move the crop window up and down. set it so the bottom of the picture is cropped.

Double click anywhere on the window to finish the crop.

Save As a TIFF called TowerCrop.tif. Select no compression. (TIFF is an industry standard lossless format).

Now open InDesign

Go to Edit>preferences>units and increments before you open a new page, set the units for inches.

Make a new document (File>New>Document or Ctrl N ). Select  letter size paper (8.5x11").

Because the paper in the printer is 8.5"x11" we have to set page size as 8.5x11.

But the live area of the ad is to be 7x10 so we set the margins; inside 1", outside .5" top .5" bottom .5" Note: Unclick the chain symbol to allow individual margin settings.

Set View>Fit in Window. If you didn't set the units to inches, right click on the rulers and select inches now.

First we're going to place the picture on the page. Select the selection tool then;

Now we create the headline

Select Arial Black 36 point

Now we're going to create outline characters in the headline.

Now we add the paragraph textbox.

Select the Text tool and draw a text box approximately as shown

Set the paragraph attributes to Arial regular, 14 pt

Select the Direct Selection Tool . The text box now has small "anchor" points .

By selecting and pulling an existing anchor point, you can change the shape of the text box

Now we use a special feature of the Direct Selection tool called the pen and anchor method to reshape the frame.

Now we bring in the text.

Make any final adjustments to the Text Box size and shape using the Direct Selection Tool make sure all the text is visible. You may have to change font size. You can type in decimals like 13.5 points if you need to.

You can also adjust leading (line spacing) using the leading adjustment box from the font tool status bar.

Finally

Use a text box to place your name, class and student number in the upper right sky area of the ad. Save the finished piece as an InDesign document and print a b&w copy for submission.
