Welding Engineering Technician - Robotics

Credential: 2-Year Ontario College Diploma

This unique two-year diploma program prepares students with training in the operation and maintenance of robotic welding systems.

Students combine theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a variety of operational areas such as: selection and application of welding processes, troubleshooting of welding equipment, and the operation of welding robotics and automation. Comprehensive knowledge of welding automation and welding robot programming are complemented by creating and reading blueprints and understanding metals and their characteristics.

All theoretical training is supported by extensive hands-on experience using the latest equipment and technology. Safe work practices and practical experience in weld inspection methods are covered in detail.

Graduates are well-prepared for careers in the manufacturing automation sector.

Student availability & wage data

Conestoga College facilitates recruitment on an ongoing basis - there are no hard deadlines. Typical time frames for work terms are listed below.

Postings are accepted beginning four months before the start of a term until all students have secured employment provided the minimum 12 consecutive weeks of full-time work is met.

Conestoga College collects data on hourly wages of co-operative education students and offers suggested ranges as a service to employers for the purpose of establishing fair and competitive compensation.

Our experience has been that employers increase wages as skills increase, particularly when employing students for more advanced work terms. The Co-operative Education Office can provide assistance to employers in establishing appropriate wage rates.

Work term capabilities

  • Perform safe work practices in the welding trade in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations for Industrial Establishments
  • Interpret drawings and other technical documents that meet appropriate engineering standards in the manufacturing industry
  • Use various computer software and programming applications to accurately communicate welding specifications to the automated welding and manufacturing personnel
  • Perform practical welding operations using appropriate tools, materials and processes that are specific to automated welding production and meet industry and quality standards and appropriate codes
  • Select, program and develop specifications for robotic and automated welding and joining systems that meet quality standards and applicable codes
