Students will learn to analyze the key components of a variety of such systems including their basic function and configuration. Energy, Storage and Management

This course will introduce students to the different types of energy storage systems in the context of energy management systems. Students will explore different types of energy storage technologies with a focus on lead acid and lithium ion batteries and will explain how to incorporate them into renewable energy systems. Students will learn about energy management as it applies to commercial and industrial buildings and will use energy software to create models, assess energy use and track energy savings. Students will analyze how energy storage technologies can provide energy management strategies, such as peak shaving and load curtailment. This course will cover basic mathematical operations commonly used by energy managers involving fractions, decimals, percentages, manipulation of algebraic equations and formulas using SI and Imperial units. An emphasis will be placed on SI and Imperial units typically used by energy managers. Students will be able to describe ratios and proportion, transpose equations to find values for different variables in a formula, describe and calculate various types of measurement such as areas and volumes and perform ordinary calculations involving SI and imperial units. This course is to allow students to demonstrate awareness of an organization's moral, legal and ethical responsibilities in the area of health and safety in an industrial environment. Canadian health and safety legislation, including WHMIS/GHS, Joint Health and Safety Committees and SDS sheets, industrial regulations and designated substance regulations in the workplace will be reviewed in detail. Students will also be exposed to ISO standards and their impacts on an organization. Students will explore issues from an occupational hygiene perspective and will develop skills in managing health complaints, conducting meetings and assessing likely impact of common issues including biological hazards and, allegations of unsafe work. A portion of this course will also be devoted to developing an understanding of the role and administrative requirements associated with employee assistance programs and understanding the trends associated with violence in the workplace. Description:

Effective Occupational Health and Safety programs recognize the connection between employee health, safety, productivity and quality. They are essential for the workplace. This course will explore the reasons why a comprehensive health and safety program is of benefit to workplaces, and the importance of involvement by all levels of workers and management in an occupational health and safety program. It will cover the principles of developing and monitoring a workplace health and safety programs using a management system model. This course will also cover the requirements of creating a safe workplace environment through the interpretation and application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and related safety legislation.
