The purpose of this handbook is to provide students with program-specific details and other important information. The material in this handbook is accurate at the date of posting, and is applicable for the current academic year. Students will be informed of handbook changes that occur, if any, through college email. Program handbooks are updated yearly and students must check their program handbook for the current edition.

Conestoga College offers a full range of engineering and technology programs to suit your interests and career aspirations. Within these, there are one-year certificate (both foundational and post-diploma), two and three-year diploma, and four-year bachelor's degree programs. Pathways exist within these allowing for students to reach their full potential.
All of our programs incorporate active learning that may include project-based learning, co-operative education, case studies and capstone projects. Active learning allows students to apply theory to practice during their studies and results in a graduate who is better prepared for the real work world. Employers like this, which is why the School of Engineering & Technology has a history of excellent graduate and co-op placement rates.

Other FacultyIn addition to the core complement of your full-time program faculty, other faculty will work with you for the duration of this program. These include faculty from other Schools for breadth and or/general education courses, as well as faculty with particular expertise in specific areas of program focus.

Program Description This dynamic two-year graduate certificate is designed to give students specialized and thorough training in the detailing, supply, fabrication and installation of steel structures including the management and coordination of projects. The training is directly related to industry standards and working practices within North America and will enable students to develop detailed drawing, analytical and communication skills for the structural steel industry. Students will learn CAD skills, building information modelling (BIM), building code requirements, specifications and estimating to assist them with challenging projects. Faculty are highly qualified specialists with current and relevant field experience. The optional co-op stream includes one co-op work term which replaces the Career Management course.
This program is available to be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. Courses will be scheduled in the afternoon and early evening to facilitate students who wish to take the program on a part-time basis while currently employed. Courses may also be scheduled to be delivered on Saturdays. Admission is available in January only. Bridging opportunities are available for trades.
Courses are delivered at the Cambridge Campus, 850 Fountain St. S, Cambridge, ON N3H 0A8. Occasionally, evening courses may be delivered at the Doon Campus, 299 Doon Valley Drive, Kitchener, ON N2G 4M4.

Program outcomes are developed with the expectations and requirements of external regulatory/accrediting bodies and consultation with Program Advisory Committees (PACs) and related industry experts. These outcomes are coordinated and articulated in a manner designed to result in the achievement of sets of specified learning attributes.

Program Academic Achievement and Requirements
Academic Promotion DecisionsStudents actively registered in cohort delivered programs who take longer than the designed program length of time to complete their studies are accountable for completing any new or additional courses that may result due to changes in the program of study. Unless otherwise stated, students registered in non-cohort delivered programs must complete the program of study within seven years of being admitted to the program.
Students must successfully complete all courses as outlined in the Program Design. All courses must be completed within 4 years of acceptance into the program in order to graduate. A student taking longer than four years to complete the program will be responsible for meeting any changes that may result from a change in the program design.
Students will begin full-time studies in the winter semester (January). Students will have a four-month break in their studies from September to December. Full-time studies resume in January and all courses can be completed by the end of May.

Full-time students who do not complete all required courses within the assigned program length may be able to continue on a part-time basis with approval from the program coordinator.
Clearance of Academic Deficiency
An incomplete mark may be assigned in accordance with the College Policy. The work required to change the incomplete mark to a grade must be done within the limits specified in the college policy. Incomplete grades will be changed to a Fail if the work is not completed satisfactorily within the time limit.
A supplemental privilege may be granted to a student whose grade in a course has been affected by extenuating medical or personal circumstances. The nature of the supplemental privilege is determined by the course instructor but may include a repeated test, assignment, or comprehensive exam. A student must apply for a supplemental privilege following the Clearance of Academic Deficiency Policy and Procedure outlined on the Conestoga Policy website and in the Student Guide. A student must meet the following conditions to be eligible for a supplemental privilege:
- Must have a final course grade of 50%
- Must have no academic offence registered in the course
- Must have attended at least 80% of the course
- Must have written or submitted all midterms and major assignments during the semester
- Must have passed at least one scheduled test
If successful, the failing grade can be upgraded only to the minimal passing grade of 55%. The acceptable range, criteria and process for a supplemental evaluation is comprehensively outlined in the Clearance of Academic Deficiency Policy and Procedure.
The current policy is to discontinue a student who has failed 3 or more courses after the first semester.
A student who leaves the program, either by choosing to withdraw or having been discontinued and subsequently seeks re-admission to the program, should note the following:
- The student may apply to be re-admitted to the program by contacting the Program Coordinator
- Re-admission will be subject to availability of space in the related semester
- Re-admission will only be permitted for the start of a semester
GraduationStudents are eligible to graduate upon completion of all academic requirements in their program of study, including co-op work terms if applicable. Students are expected to respond to their invitation through their Student Portal. Convocation ceremonies are held in the spring and fall of each academic year. Students, who take longer than the advertised program length, are responsible for completing any new or additional courses due to a program design change. Students who complete their program after the scheduled completion date are required to fill out an Application to Graduate form and submit it with payment to the Registrar's Office. Students who are discontinued or have withdrawn and then return to the college will be placed in the current program design and must meet all requirements to graduate.
WithdrawalStudents considering a withdrawal from a program should meet with their Program Coordinator/Academic Advisor prior to withdrawing. In order to formally withdraw from a program, the student must complete the Program Withdrawal form and submit it to the Registrar's Office. Deadlines for withdrawing from a program with/without an academic penalty or with/without a refund are posted on the website under Academic Dates.
Program start and end dates, holidays and deadlines for course add/drop, withdrawal and refunds are located in on the College's Academic Dates website. Course changes (add/dropping may also be made through the Student Portal under the "My Courses" tab).
The program believes that the benefits of academic studies come not only from independent study and the preparation of materials for formal grading but also from participation in class and laboratory activities. Regular attendance is therefore required in all classes, labs, tests, exams, quizzes and other scheduled academic activities. Students are expected to meet all deadlines. Lack of attendance means:
- The student missed important information/skill demonstrations provided in class
- The student has reduced time to learn and demonstrate knowledge and skills
- Faculty may have to repeat material thus reducing the time for delivery of the remaining parts of the course
- Fellow students are often disadvantaged by absent students/team members
- Lack of participation is a major safety concern
Do not schedule appointments, work or travel during scheduled classes.
Conestoga has more than 400 awards, bursaries, scholarships and academic grants available to Conestoga students. These funds are made available to our students through the partnerships we have established with local business and industry leaders. To be considered for an award, complete the General Application available through your Student Portal. Notifications and instructions to complete the application are sent to all full-time students' email accounts in the fall semester (Deadline: First Friday in October) and winter semester (Deadline: First Friday in February). Communication - School Standard
Conestoga College and eConestoga student email accounts are used to communicate with students. Students are expected to regularly check their student email accounts. Faculty and staff will not respond to emails from non-Conestoga email addresses.
Course Changes (Adding/Dropping)
Students can find their program design on the Student Portal by following the steps below:
- Log in to Student Portal.
- Click on 'My Courses' tab.
- Scroll over the icons to the right of individual course listings.
- If a course withdrawal is processed prior to the deadline date, a dropped course will be recorded as a "W" (withdrawal) on the transcript.
- If a course withdrawal is processed after the deadline, an "F" (fail) will be recorded on the transcript.
Applying to the Co-op Stream (starting with the 1801 cohort and subsequent unless otherwise noted):
- All applicants apply to the non co-op program. Students will be informed of the application deadline and process to apply for the Co-op Stream. Labour market conditions determine the number of co-op seats in optional co-op programs. Every student who meets academic eligibility requirements may not be admitted to the co-op stream.
- To be considered for admission to the co-op stream, students are required to achieve a minimum overall 75% session weighted average in Level 1 with no dropped or failed courses.
To participate in a co-op work term, students must (starting with the 1801 cohort and subsequent unless otherwise noted) :
- Successfully complete the Co-op and Career Preparation modules (CEPR8200/CDEV1020). Students who fail Co-op and Career Preparation will not be permitted to search for co-op employment nor will they be able to participate in a co-op work term. Students who fail Co-op and Career Preparation more than twice will not be permitted to continue in their co-op program (exceptions may be granted for degrees).
- Be enrolled full-time (full-time = 70% of the hours, or 66 2/3 % of the courses in the current session/level of the Program Design.) Exceptions will apply to those students who have been granted special timetabling based on formal identification of barriers or challenges for which accommodation is required. Academic eligibility requirements must still be met prior to being granted access to seek a co-op work term.
- Must have successfully completed all but two core courses, according to the program design, by the eligibility term prior to any given work term (regardless of the level the student was placed in advanced standing).
- Students (even those on special timetables) will not be permitted to complete a co-op work term until conditions above are met and all but two core course deficiencies, according to the program design, are cleared.
- Co-op work terms may need to be re-sequenced to allow academic deficiencies to be cleared or in the event a student changes cohorts (i.e. graduation is delayed by one year or more). Students may not repeat a passed work term.
- Academic eligibility for a co-op work term is based on the term that occurs two terms prior to any work term.
- Should a student's academic performance decline considerably (including cumulative missed courses) during the term just prior to any work term, the college reserves the right to withdraw the student from the upcoming work term.
- Meet program specific co-op work term eligibility requirements.
- Academic eligibility for a co-op work term is based on the term that occurs two terms prior to any work term.
- Students may only fail/defer one work term regardless of the reason(s).
- Students who do not successfully complete their deferred work term will be removed from the co-op stream.
- Since only one work term may be failed/deferred regardless of the reason(s), should a subsequent work term be missed/failed/unsecured (not successfully completed for any reason) the student will be immediately removed from the co-op stream.
- Students who are discontinued are not eligible for co-op work terms.

- Co-op programs add value to your education. Earn while you apply what you learn in a real workplace environment. See the Co-op webpages for more details.
- The College cannot guarantee co-op employment. All co-op students are required to conduct an independent co-op job search in addition to the supports and services provided by the Department of Co-op Education.
- Students are responsible for their own transportation and associated costs in order to complete work term requirements. Work locations may not always be readily accessible by public transportation.
- Students who are not eligible for co-op or do not secure a co-op work term by the start of the work term semester will be offered the option to enroll in the 15 credit Career Management in Canada GCM8000 co-op alternative. This co-op alternative involves one 3-hour on-campus session per week and 12 hours per week of online and out-of-class activity.
- If GCM8000 is selected, the student must attend sessions from the first session of the term and cannot transfer back into the co-op stream.
- GCM8000 may be delivered at the Doon, Waterloo, or Cambridge campus.
Co-operative Education Eligibility
If applicable to your program, students must maintain the academic requirements of their program to remain in the co-op stream. Their eligibility to participate in a co-op work term is evaluated at the end of the term that occurs two terms prior to the co-op opportunity. Conestoga recognizes you may have formal post-secondary education that may allow you to enter a program at an advanced level or provide for individual course exemptions.To ensure your credits are eligible for transfer, please contact our Credit Transfer Office. Equipment, Supplies and Texts
All students entering Structural Steel Management and Detailing program must have a laptop computer. The College provides registered students, while on campus, with wireless and hard-wired internet access, access to free software downloads, and server-based access to several program-specific software applications. Additionally, open access computer labs with all required software are available for all students. Most courses in the program require computers based on in-class assignments and exams; therefore all students must own and maintain their laptops and must come to the class with their laptops. Students will be required to purchase textbooks and learning packages from the Bookstore as outlined in the specific course outline.
Evaluations (deadlines, tests and examinations)
The faculty is responsible to:
- Provide to students, at the start of each course, the due dates for all deliverables (e.g., assignments, tests, reports, projects, class participation) and the respective weighting of each toward the student's final mark
- Return tests and quizzes within one to two weeks of their administering
- Return exams within two to three weeks of their administering
- Return assignments and projects within two to three weeks of their scheduled submission
- Respond to student requests for consultations to discuss their performance with respect to coursework
Students are responsible to:
- Submit coursework, complete projects and write exams as set out on the schedule provided at the start of each course
- Submit coursework in accordance with format and requirements described by course faculty and project outlines
- Attend and participate in lectures, presentations of their own and their colleagues' work
- Fully disclose and completely reference all sources used in their work (e.g., web-based, printed, personal contacts)
- Advise faculty of circumstances that would prevent the completion of student work as outlined in course schedules, and provide documentation
Teachers reserve the right to retain marked tests. Marked tests that the faculty chooses not to return will be made available for the students to review in the faculty member's office.
The program and course/module learning outcomes provide the frame of reference for evaluation. Learning experiences are planned in order that the student can demonstrate the ability to correlate theory with practice.
Evaluation is a continuous process that assesses student performance. A variety of tools are used for evaluation including:
- quizzes, written tests and examinations
- oral presentations and demonstrations
- written assignments, such as books reports, case studies, business plans, journals, logs, portfolios
- term projects
- lab assignments
Results of Evaluation
Late Submission of Student Work
Student work submitted after the due date/time, and without accepted extenuating circumstances, may be graded by faculty but the mark may be progressively reduced.
Extension to Submission of Student Work
It is acknowledged that events can happen to either faculty or students that disrupt the planned schedule. Each incident will be addressed on an individual, case-by-case basis by course faculty.
Guidelines for Writing Tests and Exams
- Students are required to bring their college ID cards to tests and exams.
- The faculty/invigilator may request that books, bags, coats, caps, etc. be left in a designated area.
- The faculty/invigilator has the authority to assign seats.
- Students must wait until so directed before turning over and starting their test or exam.
- Students are not permitted to talk after the test or exam has started, except to the faculty/invigilator.
- Students may not enter the exam/test room after 30 minutes past the start nor leave the room before 30 minutes has passed after the start of the test or exam.
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been acquired through employment, education (informal/ formal), non-formal learning or other life experiences. Prior learning must be measured to meet the required course outcomes and grading standards. This policy applies to candidates who wish to earn academic credit for a course in acknowledgement of significant life and work experience. PLAR is not to be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of academic deficiencies and/or to improve grades.
Students must be at least 19 years of age or have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) to be eligible to apply for PLAR.
Program Advisory Committee
Each program at Conestoga College has a Program Advisory Committee (PAC), which is made up of industry and academic representatives, as well as current students. They meet several times a year to discuss the direction in which that industry is heading and any improvements that can be made to keep the program current. This helps to ensure that students are learning material that is relevant to their industry.
At the beginning of each year, the coordinator of the program will ask for student volunteers. The student representatives are expected to attend the meetings. Students must prepare and submit a report based on guidelines provided by the Program Chair/Coordinator which will be presented at the meeting. Students are expected to be professional, dress in casual business attire and engage in discussions.
Prior to transferring to another program, it is recommended that the student meets with the program coordinator or academic advisor. Students who decide to change programs may do so by completing and submitting a Program Application Form to the Registrar's Office. If considering transferring to a program outside the school in which they are currently enrolled, students may want to discuss options with a Career Advisor. When a student moves from one Conestoga program to another and where course numbers/codes are identical or equivalent, automatic credit is given if passing grades are met. Additional information for career or academic advising is available from faculty, program coordinators or career advisors in the Welcome Centre or on the Conestoga website.

Key Performance Indicators
All college programs in the province are evaluated using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). This survey is conducted each academic year in select classes. Strategic goals to improve the programs are developed from these results. This data and other data specific to the campus and the program/school are collected so that Conestoga College can continually improve quality.
Student Appraisal of Teaching (SAT)
The Student Appraisal of Teaching (SAT) allows direct feedback from students on teaching for a particular course. Completion of the SAT forms give teachers and academic managers valuable information to use for the improvement of teaching at Conestoga.
The SAT process has two components: Quick-SAT and Full-SAT. The Quick-SAT is 5 questions, occurs during week 5 of classes and provides early feedback to faculty about the student experience within their classroom. The Full-SAT is 44 questions and occurs late in the semester; a summary of the results goes to the academic manager to be shared with the faculty member. Typically about one-quarter of the faculty is appraised per term. All full-time faculty have a SAT review at least once every two years. Part-time faculty may be reviewed more frequently. Continuing Education students may have an opportunity to complete a SAT form during their Continuing Education course.
After Hours Access
Conestoga hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Conestoga recognizes that in some programs of study, students may require after-hours access to classrooms and labs. After-hours access is maintained in accordance with the academic needs of individual programs. The after-hours access is a privilege, not a right.
If after-hours access is required, faculty must contact security in advance, with the student(s) name, ID number, and program information, along with signed paperwork approving access. The student must follow these guidelines:
- Be in the designated room with another approved person
- Inform security immediately of any out-of-the normal situations
- Have student identification card available
- Notify security upon departure
- Not move furniture

Full-time courses at Conestoga are typically delivered during the following hours:
- Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
In some instances, classes will be scheduled outside of this time frame to accommodate course, program, and college requirements.

Emergency Telephone Messages
It may be necessary for family members to contact a student in an emergency situation. Family members need to know the student number, program name, school, and campus the student is registered in, to aid Security in locating the student. This information will be required when the family member calls. Please have family members contact Security directly at 519-748-5220, ext. 3357 - only if it is an emergency.

A Student Protection Acknowledgement confirmation pop-up will appear when a student logs into the Student Portal on a yearly basis. This will direct students to policies and procedures relevant to their academic responsibilities. Start your college experience by completing Conestoga 101 (CON0101) on eConestoga, a mandatory course for all new full-time students that will take you approximately one hour to complete. CON0101 provides an overview of the supports, services, and opportunities available to you throughout your time at Conestoga. Make sure you complete it early on in the term, as it contains valuable information that will help you transition to Conestoga.

School of Liberal Studies
The purpose of diploma General Education electives and Degree Breadth electives is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to succeed not just in their chosen career fields, but in all life paths. Working collaboratively with your program, diploma General Education and degree Breadth elective courses cultivate critical and creative thinking skills, civic engagement and knowledge of the broader world of arts, culture and science that helps make you more reflective, creative, and effective in your own life.
All Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, and Degree programs at Conestoga require students to complete general education electives / interdisciplinary breadth.

Attendance at Evaluations
Working Together to Plan Your Success
Your success matters! As an emerging professional, it is important that you demonstrate the same professional attitude to your program that you will be required to demonstrate to your future workplace. Regular, punctual attendance, and active participation in scheduled classes, field and clinical placements, labs and any on-campus and off-campus activities scheduled by your program will help you to understand and master the learning complexities of your program.
If extenuating, unplanned circumstances require you to miss a class, please note that it is your responsibility to follow up with individual faculty members and to acquire any missed information.
Attendance for Evaluations
Evaluations are critical components of each course and your overall success in your program. An evaluation is defined as a test, exam, presentation or any other formal assessment that contributes to your course mark that requires your presence, in class or on-line. Please note that in many programs across the College, every field placement, clinical day, and lab/shop day is considered crucial to your overall learning and success and the expectation is that you attend. If you are in a program that includes field or clinical placements, labs/shops, or any other on or off campus activities, it is essential that you discuss attendance requirements with your program faculty in order to understand expectations and consequences.
Your attendance for all evaluations is a requirement. If there is a concerning pattern of absence from evaluations across your program, you may be asked to meet with the Program Coordinator and/or Student Advisor to discuss strategies for success.
While circumstances such as religious holidays and academic accommodations may necessitate rescheduling of evaluations and will be accommodated, please note that there will be no special arrangements made for rescheduling evaluations due to personal conflicts such as work or vacation plans.
In order to facilitate a smooth implementation for all scheduled evaluations, both you and your program faculty have responsibilities which are listed below:
- To communicate all course obligations to you at the beginning of each semester through the Instructional Plan, including evaluation and presentation dates.
- To communicate, in writing, any unplanned extenuating circumstances involving the college, the program or the faculty members that may require changes to the course schedule.
- To provide alternative evaluation arrangements for missed evaluations/work due to recognized religious holidays as defined by the College Employer Council and documented accommodations through the Accessibility Office.
- To accept alternative evaluation requests in good faith and examine based on the unique circumstances and students' individual needs.
- To facilitate alternative evaluation arrangements as described below.
- To be informed about all course obligations and due dates.
- To inform your faculty member in writing of the need to reschedule evaluations due to a religious holiday as defined by the College Employer Council.
- If you have to be absent from any scheduled evaluation, report your absence on the Student Portal using the procedure below. You must do this prior to the start of the evaluation or risk receiving a mark of zero.
How to Report Absences on the Student Portal
- Log into the Student Portal and click on the 'Absence tab'.
- Indicate whether or not there is an assessment scheduled on that day by clicking 'Yes or No', as well as the reason for the absence (illness or other).
- Click 'Continue' to report the absence.
- Click 'I agree' to confirm the absence.
- You will receive a confirmation email that your absence has been recorded.
Important! Please note the following:
- The earliest you can record an absence for a particular day, is after 8:00 p.m. the day before. You must report each day you are absent.
- The Absence Recording System will show you as being absent for the day, starting from the time that you recorded the absence. For example, if you record your absence on a specific day at 11:00 a.m., the system will show you as being absent for all classes starting after 11:00 a.m. that day.
- If you are going to be present for any other classes on the day for which you recorded an absence, please let the faculty member know by attending or following up by eConestoga or college email.
- When you return to campus, make eConestoga or email contact immediately with the faculty member associated with the evaluation you missed in order to arrange appropriate follow up.
Valid Absence from Scheduled Evaluations Less than 20%
Conestoga recognizes that unexpected circumstances such as brief illness do arise during the semester and that a visit to a health practitioner may not be necessary. A valid absence from a scheduled evaluation worth less than 20% of the final grade which is not documented through the Accessibility Office or previously arranged due to religious holidays, will be accommodated once per course during the semester, subject to proper communication as described in the Student Responsibilities section above. If the evaluation cannot be rescheduled, (for example an experiential activity, lab or participation in a group presentation) reallocation of marks to another evaluation item will be determined by faculty and communicated to student via email to their eConestoga or college email address, or documented on an interview record and signed off by both faculty member and student.
Absence from additional scheduled evaluations worth less than 20% in the same course may require documentation for verification.
Valid Absence from Scheduled Evaluations 20% or More
Absence from scheduled evaluations worth 20% or more of the final grade that are not documented through the Accessibility Office or arranged due to religious holidays, will require appropriate documentation for verification, subject to proper communication as described in the Student Responsibilities section above.
Alternative Evaluation Arrangements
- Faculty members will determine alternative evaluation arrangements as appropriate.
- Students will complete any necessary forms.
- Students are required to complete the alternative evaluation as scheduled. If an evaluation cannot be rescheduled (for example an experiential activity or participation in a group presentation) reallocation of marks will be determined by faculty and communicated to student via eConestoga or college email, or documented on an interview record and signed off by both faculty member and student.
- Tests will be made up in the Conestoga Test Centre in the following week, or by individual arrangements with course faculty member.
- If the evaluation is to be conducted in the Conestoga Test Centre, students will be asked to show their ONECard* before permitted to write the test.
* Students taking part-time courses or in programs where a OneCard is not provided may be asked to show alternate ID.

Conestoga's Accessible Learning services provide support for students with permanent and temporary disabilities who feel they are encountering barriers to learning. They work with students to understand the impact of a disability in the college environment and will help develop a success plan that considers student goals and required academic accommodations. Accessible Learning will also communicate necessary accomodations to professors on behalf of the student.
