Conestoga's Faculty Orientation Program consists of five mandatory and five optional workshops. These workshops should be completed within eight months of being hired.
Sessional, partial-load and part-time faculty are compensated for attending these workshops.
Once you have your Condor ID, you can sign up for these workshops in the Student Portal.

These workshops are three hour sessions, offered prior to each semester, in the evening, at the start of each semester and during Student Success Week (Week 8).
Teaching at Conestoga (PDEV0425)
Review Conestoga's expectations of faculty members and the importance of program design, program learning outcomes, course outlines, the Instructional Plan, and accessible education materials and delivery. Discuss the Student Appraisal of Teaching (SAT) and Observation of Teaching Form. Meet the Faculty Union.
Creating a Positive Learning Environment (PDEV0935)Learn about the diversity of our student population and explore strategies for creating a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment. Incorporate active learning opportunities and proactive classroom management into your lesson planning.
Discuss terminology, expected practices and assessment theory, and develop skills needed to approach the assessment process with confidence. Conestoga's Evaluation of Student Learning Policy promotes consistent, fair and timely evaluation of student learning and is an integral aspect of good pedagogy.

Providing Online Materials to Students: eConestoga and the Essential Elements (PDEV0361)
Learn how to set up your course in eConestoga so that it meets the required Essential Elements. The Essential Elements make it easy to provide students access to course handouts, videos, readings, presentations, assignment information and grades. Create a learning environment that meets accessibility requirements. This is a hands-on session in a computer lab.

Technology Orientation for New Faculty (PDEV 0553)
Come for a comprehensive session featuring demonstration of classroom technologies, and hands on practice time. During the first hour, you will become oriented to various portals and in-class technologies. You will start to become familiar with the various tech supports on campus and you will be shown how to prepare for your first classroom deliveries. During the second hour, you will have the chance to ask specific questions, explore a standard classroom, and prepare for teaching.
Creating Lesson Plans (PDEV 0556)
Learn how to move your course outline and Instructional Plan into a lesson for each class meeting. Review the BOPPPPS method of lesson planning and then get support as you work at preparing lesson plans for your course(s) using the template provided.
PowerPoint as a Teaching Tool (PDEV 0514)
Is PowerPoint your go-to presentation method in class? Participate in this working session about best practices for building slides! You will adjust PowerPoints to use recommended fonts, backgrounds and styles. Evaluate your use of text and white space, and see what research suggests helps memory and learning. Practice incorporating video and images in your design, and discover examples of appropriate citation and referencing. Practice using the Accessibility Checker to make sure your slides pass AODA accessibility standards.

This workshop is a chance for you to ask about questioning techniques, helping international students succeed, developing assessments, rubrics, semester planning and/or anything else you may need support with as you start your teaching.
