Topics include: electromagnetic induction and electromagnetic coupling, skin effect, theory and construction techniques of coils, impedance matching networks, transformers, passive filters, tuned circuits. Capstone Project I

This course focuses on the research, planning and design phases of the students’ final year technical project. Selected project topic and scope are to be at a suitable technologist’s level and students are encouraged to select projects of interest to potential employers. During this term the students continue to research and refine their project, complete a written and oral presentation of their Concept Proposal for faculty approval, prepare a project Requirements document, a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) and a Specifications document. Description:

This course covers both the analysis and design of FIR and IIR digital filters. Implementations in both hardware (DSP chips) and software will be discussed. Emphasis on the use of the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) as an analysis tool will also be included. Examples will be presented to illustrate the use of digital filtering in areas such as speech processing, noise cancelling, and telecommunications. This course emphasizes the application of Digital Signal Processing based on the theoretical background provided in DSP Applications I.

This course provides an introduction to fundamentals of mobile communications and wireless networks. It presents the wireless and mobile network architectures, technologies and protocols. Topics covered include cellular and mobile IP concepts. It also introduces the various wireless 1G, 2G, and 3G platforms, architecture, and protocols.   1. Be familiar with all types of Telecommunications Systems including Telephony, Radio, Microwave, Satellite and Fibre Optic communications, which use Analog or Digital Modulation/De-modulation techniques. In addition, be familiar with transmission media including Transmission Lines, Waveguide, Optical Fibre and Antenna Systems.
  2. Design, develop, test, configure and maintain electronic communications systems by the application of both analogue and digital techniques and using a variety of electronic instruments, development systems and computer software as applied to the Telecommunications field.
  3. Interface analogue and digital systems to provide solutions to a variety of performance and operational problems of a typical Telecommunications network.
  4. Interface computer hardware and software with telecommunications systems used in the transmission of both analogue and digital information.
  5. Evaluate, refine and solve engineering problems requiring the exercise of sound technical judgement and knowledge of engineering principles and practices as well as the effect on other users of the radio spectrum.
  6. Complete a sequence of tasks accomplishing a specified work-related objective within a given time frame and in a co-ordinated and organized manner, establishing schedules and deadlines and reporting as necessary.
