Wireless Network Design and Build
TCOM8051
Examine processes related to the design and build of wireless network infrastructure solutions. Topics include determining what sort of solution is appropriate for the circumstances and proceeds to explain the impact of zoning and city-planning bylaws and land-use issues. The design/build process is detailed and includes such topics as issuing search rings, site acquisition, CW (propagation tests), candidate evaluation, the building cycle, site testing and regulatory issues. Alternatives to the traditional site acquisition process are explored. Supplementary topics including in-building applications.

Program outcomes
- Test and measure the power levels and spectrum characteristics of RF signals with focus on conformance testing of user equipment for mobile telecommunication standards including LTE.
- Use industry standard RF planning, design and optimization tools to place wireless cell sites, and generate coverage maps and interference surveys.
- Plan and build a wired and/or wireless data or computer network using system design documentation. Applications will include the design of smart home and multi-LAN networks.
- Produce documentation and reports related to network components and applications performance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems related to both wired and wireless networks using standardized approaches and methodologies.
- Configure, install and upgrade network hardware components such as routers and switches according to best practices in the industry.
- Monitor and evaluate network security issues and perform basic security audits on both wired and wireless networks.
- Assist in the collection and analysis of user requirements related to both wired and wireless networks.
- Examine change control, issue documentation and problem escalation procedures and processes as per industry best practices.
- Generate and maintain “as built” network documentation following industry best practices.
- Compare network performance against service levels and assist in the development of action plans as required against service level agreements.
- Determine the applicability of new wired and wireless technologies, such as 5G LTE, to solving network related issues using critical thinking and research skills.
