Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or 19 years of age or older with mature student status (See Mature Student definition for details.)
  • Grade 12 compulsory English, C (70%) or U (60%), or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Communications (COMM1251), or equivalent
  • All applicants who meet the academic strength requirements (70%) must attend a program information session and present a portfolio of their creative work.

Note re: admission requirements

  • Applicants possessing degrees/diplomas from institutions where the language of instruction was not English will be required to provide test scores as evidence of their English language proficiency. Test scores, if required, would be a minimum of TOEFL iBT 80 (effective January 2024 with no individual score less than 20); IELTS 6.0 with no bands less than 5.5; CAEL 70 with no sub-test band scores less than 60; PTE Academic 51; Conestoga English Language Test (CELT) Band 5; Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 105; Cambridge Exams 170 with no individual skill less than 165, or equivalent scores in other recognized standard tests of English.
  • We offer a language program for students whose English language skills are below the standard required for admission but all other admission criteria have been met. An applicant will be eligible for admission to the program after completion of level 4 of the General Arts and Science - English Language Studies (ELS) program with an overall grade average of 70%. Placement in the ELS program is determined by scores on an in-house English language test or TOEFL or IELTS.

Admission procedures

  • An academic strength is calculated by averaging the submitted marks of required subjects. If more than one mark is received for a required subject, the highest mark will be used in the calculation.
  • Ten (10) additional marks are added to each Advanced level, OAC, U, U/C, and post-secondary course used in the calculation of academic strength.
  • Applicants meeting minimum academic requirements are invited to begin the selection process which requires them to attend a program information meeting where they will present a portfolio of their design-related work.
    • The portfolio presentation provides the applicant with an opportunity to show and explain their work. Through the presentation, the program faculty assess the applicant's communication skills and aptitude for the program.
  • Portfolio
    • A portfolio consists of samples of the applicant's work. Portfolios should include a maximum of 15 diverse pieces of your creative work plus one sketchbook. Pieces may include art and design-related work such as: symbols, lettering, paintings, sculptures, drawings, finished illustrations, graphic design and web design, and/or other applied graphics.
  • Final selection is made using a formula that combines academic strength with the portfolio creative, technical, survey and presentation scores.
  • A sound English background is important for success in this program and is considered during the admission selection process. Minimum cutoffs apply.

Portfolio requirements

The portfolio submission is a mandatory component of the admission process for the Graphic Design program.


Eligible candidates who satisfy the basic academic criteria are encouraged to engage in the selection procedure. This involves submitting a portfolio for assessment. Selection will be determined by a combination of academic accomplishments, whether ongoing or completed, and the outcome of the portfolio review.

Submissions are completed online. Applicants will receive an invitation from the Admissions department. The submission package must include:

  1. Design survey (included in submission form)
  2. Portfolio file containing project work and details
  3. Sketchbook file or video
  4. Portfolio presentation

All submitted work must be entirely original. AI-generated content, clip art and uncredited online images are not permitted.

Portfolio file containing project work and details

Applicants must submit one file (slides or PDF) containing 7–10 original projects. For each project, include:

  • Project title
  • Media used
  • Date or year created
  • Context (academic, personal or freelance work)
  • A brief rationale explaining the purpose or concept of the project

Media requirements

For the media category, list all media used in the creation of each project. Be specific. Examples include:   

  • Traditional or analog media: pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, ink, textile, clay, acrylic or oil paint
  • Digital media: video, animation and software applications such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop or Premiere

For digital media projects, one project must include process work that demonstrates research, drafts and concept development. This process work must be presented in accompanying slides.   

Sketchbook file or video

Sketchbooks typically include unfinished work such as practice exercises, concept development, research, observational drawings, inspiration, loose ideas and sketches. To submit sketchbook content, applicants may choose one of the following:

  • a video recording of the applicant turning the pages of the sketchbook
  • a slide presentation or PDF showing selected sketchbook pages or compiled reference photos
Portfolio presentation

Option 1: Recorded presentation

Record a three- to five-minute video presenting two to three portfolio projects. The presentation should focus on:

  • Research and concept development
  • Process and material testing
  • Experimentation and iterations
  • Final design decisions

Both the applicant and the project must be visible in the video.

Video submission details

Videos may be recorded using a phone or laptop and may be:

  • Embedded in slides
  • Uploaded to a personal website
  • Uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo

If using online platforms, applicants must provide URLs and ensure access permissions or passwords are included.

Option 2: Live online presentation

Instead of uploading a video, applicants may book a one-on-one, 10-minute online presentation with program faculty. To book a session, email jbaljkas@conestogac.on.ca.

Program requirements

  • Students will be required to purchase a design kit. Details about this requirement will be communicated upon confirmation of enrolment.

Credit transfer

You might be eligible to enter a program at an advanced level, or be exempt from a course, if you have formal post-secondary education. Learn more about credit transfer opportunities.
