Introduction to AutoCAD

This introductory course is designed for the person who has limited or no experience with the CAD system and a minimal technical background. This course is designed to present the new user with the basic tools and skills necessary to function in AutoCAD. Participants will focus on basic drawing, editing, viewing and storage. Photovoltaic Grid Design: Residential and Small Commercial

Description: Through a series of lectures and labs, this course will introduce the students to the design and installation concepts of a PV System as applied to residential and small commercial installations. Students will be introduced to solar insulation characteristics; PV panel theory, construction and performance; site analysis; battery types, PV charge control types; electrical integration; utility tied regulations installation and safety; and an introduction to national and international incentive programs.

Energy Storage and Management

Description: This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of energy conversion, different types of energy storage systems, basic energy calculations and the importance of energy management. Students will explore different types of energy storage technologies with a focus on lead acid and lithium ion batteries and will explain how to incorporate them into renewable energy systems. Students will learn about energy management as it applies to commercial and industrial buildings and will use energy software to create models, asses energy use and track energy savings. Students will analyze how energy storage technologies can provide energy management strategies, such as peak shaving and load curtailment. Students will gain a better understanding of the supply/demand relationship of energy.

Mathematics for Technical Applications

Description: This course when successfully completed will provide an understanding of terminology, basic concepts and applications of fractions, ratio, proportion, percent, unit conversion, pre-algebra and basic algebra as related to trade problems and construction layout. The fundaments of SI will be discussed to assist students in developing a functional knowledge of the metric system. Students will be required to perform occupational calculations in the imperial and metric systems and to solve technical problems pertaining to trade problems and construction layout.

Building Green

Description: Students explore many facets of building green in the construction industry from a contractor’s or builder’s perspective. Renewable energy sources, different project delivery methods and assembling a building team will be reviewed to achieve a green building. The various ratings systems (LEED, Green Globes, BREEAM, Net Zero Energy, etc.) with emphasis on new construction is addressed. Building to reduce environmental impact on a construction site, save natural resources by using alternative building materials and recycle construction waste rather than landfills will be emphasized throughout this course.

Grounding and Installation

Description: Through a series of lectures and labs, this course will introduce the students to the requirements and best practices for installation of renewable energy electrical systems, and the grounding of those systems. Students will learn to compare the different installation methods, the requirements for correctly grounding and bonding, and how to perform ground resistivity measurement. Students will get hands-on experience with various installation methods and will practice performing the calculations and connections required to ensure adequate grounding and installation.

Renewable Thermal Technology

Description: This course will provide the students with the background knowledge and skills needed to provide rational for proposing and installing renewable thermal technologies. Students will learn to describe the key components of a variety of such systems including their basic function and configuration. Topics covered will include solar water heating, solar pool heating, solar air heating, air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, types of solar collectors, system configurations, sloped roof installation methods, pipe selection and assembly, fluid types, pumps, thermal storage tank options, basic system controls, and air and ground source heat pumps.

Safety and Working at Heights

Description: This course is designed to give students the knowledge and understanding of various safety-related topics pertinent to construction and industrial environments, including work around lifting operations and working at heights. Students will also be introduced to lifting and moving loads in a controlled and safe manner. This course will also provide students with the basic knowledge required to work safely in areas exposed to fall hazards. A review of legislative requirements, due diligence, WHMIS, occupational health and safety requirements will also be discussed. The student will also address the purpose, and basic concepts in the operation of Elevating (Aerial) Work Platforms (AWP).
