Digital Design

Description: This course allows students to explore a variety of fundamental design principals and theories as they apply to digital media. Students will learn the principals of typography, spatial perception, perspective and color theory. Current design issues, methodologies and trends will be explored, discussed and integrated into assignments.

Digital Image Editing I

Description:

This course focuses on digital photography and compositing techniques that will enable students to create vibrant content for their motion graphics. Students will manipulate still images, alter existing images and create new content required for digital compositing. The learning format includes lectures, in-class assignments and lab time.

Digital Media Production I

Description:

Students will work to become proficient video editors and will create digital videos from a variety of sources. Class lectures and hands-on labs will enable students to capture images with DSLR cameras and HD video equipment. Green screen, stop motion photography and digital video are some of the essential production elements that students will employ while working on projects and assignments.

Vector Graphics
GRDN8010

Description: Vector graphics are an essential tool in the creation of motion graphics. Students will work with graphic design and illustration software to create logos, brands, characters and icons. Through the use of 2D and 3D vector animation software students will explore animation, motion and design. Students will develop and produce creative works for web, broadcast television and mobile devices.

Motion Graphics I

Description:

This course integrates skills being learned in the concurrent courses. Students delve into the world of motion graphics in a 2D and 3D environment. Basic animation principles, timing, movement and keyframes will be studied while working with digital media content. The students will effectively utilize cameras, lights and dynamic movement in project-based assignments. Animations will be created for a variety of digital devices to give students the opportunity to test their media in a practical setting.

Safety in the Workplace
OHS1320

Description: This course focuses on developing awareness and skills for the student to safely manage and conduct him or herself within a variety of employment settings. Through the units of the course, participants will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding and knowledge of general Health and Safety guidelines, including WHMIS, Fire Safety and Workplace Violence. The unit on Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act will instruct the student on the requirements for Accessible Customer Service and Integrated Accessibility Standard Regulations. General information on Safe Driving, Privacy of Information and Hand Washing will be addressed as well. The course also provides participants with critical information regarding their insurance coverage (WSIB or other) while employed. As well as guidelines to follow in the event of an injury. Participants will receive a printable Record of Completion upon successful conclusion of this course, in order to demonstrate awareness of safe working practices to their employers.

Description: Students will study3D animation and modeling techniques required to create 3D environments, vibrant text, logos, and objects. The use of textures, lights and cameras within a 3D world will be examined. Students will study techniques used to bring images into 3D programs for modeling and Creating 3D materials. There will be a focus on 3D rending and how settings like texture painting, cameras and lighting affect the final image and its stylistic look.

Motion Graphics Capstone

Description: In this course students work with clients to produce creative and vibrant motion graphics material for a variety of different applications from digital signage, to immersive experiences. Students will work within the limits and requirements of the particular media employed and address the need for current and up to date information while delivering creative and eye-catching digital content. Field Placement (Animation and Motion Graphics)
FPLT8010

Description:

This course prepares students and facilitates a placement experience with a company/agency which has been approved by the program. Students will review employability skills in class and then practise these skills as they take an active role in securing a placement. Students will refine self-marketing techniques to establish cohesive branding of themselves at a professional level. Engaging in the work environment of a professionally relevant company/agency will allow students to apply their education and skills contributing to their mutual benefit.

Appropriate workplace behaviour and etiquette is expected as students use this opportunity to expand their network of industry contacts and effectively market their personal brand. Through this experience, students can cultivate confidence, escalate awareness of industry practices, add to their resume & portfolio, and contribute to their own career success.

Motion Graphics II
GRDN8030

Description: In this course students will work with motion graphics software to combine 3D animation and digital media footage. Emphasis is placed on realism as students combine the two worlds to produce vibrant content. Motion tracking, digital compositing with motion graphics and post production effects will be utilized in assignments and projects.

Program outcomes

  1. Design and execute kinetic type and infographics sequences using typography, style and visual communication.
  2. Communicate effectively with colleagues and clients to complete animation and infographics projects using communication, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  3. Script, complete production and manage digital media projects to enhance interactive and non-interactive viewer experiences.
  4. Manage the production of motion graphic content and its deployment via mobile devices, broadcast television, digital signage, digital displays, augmented reality and the web.
  5. Plan and commission the appropriate technical infrastructure to complete a digital or multimedia project in compliance with production schedule.
  6. Select the appropriate techniques and convergent technologies, including hardware and software protocols specific to the target platform to complete projects according to the client brief, budget and context.
  7. Examine and evaluate creative digital images, animations and compositions for utilization in multimedia installations.
  8. Digitally manipulate multiple images to match live-action footage and re-create natural phenomena.
  9. Integrate 2D and 3D computer generated imagery, live action elements and motion graphics to tell a story.
  10. Create customized tools through software or scripting to allow for more advanced application of visual effects techniques such as user interfaces for a variety of interactive platforms.
  11. Manage technologies that deploy content through networks and other distribution methodologies.
  12. Work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams to produce graphic and animation elements.
  13. Present an portfolio of motion graphics and animation projects and products that highlights one’s creativity and proficiency with relevant motion graphics and animation technologies
