Electrical Industry Fundamentals
ELEC1935

Description:

This course will provide an introduction to key electrical concepts, such as Ohms Law, magnetism and induction as well as an opportunity to develop hands-on skills. Students will connect, install and troubleshoot typical electrical equipment and associated wiring found in industry, including motors, raceways and circuits, ensuring all their work conforms to the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), as well as professional trade practices.

Employment Strategies and Workplace Exposure

Description: Students will prepare to enter the job market and will be given the opportunity explore a variety of workplaces in this course. Life-long career planning strategies will be the focus including networking, interview and researching skills; developing a personalized resume and cover letter; and understanding current labour market information. They will also develop and enhance skills in teamwork, decision making and goal setting. A variety of workplace tours will be included to increase their knowledge of the trade and industry.

Field Placement Industrial Try-A-Trade

Description:

This course is an application-oriented mathematics course in which the student utilizes basic mathematical operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. In addition, students will use both metric and imperial systems when solving problems. This course is designed to develop proficiency in mathematics necessary for work in various skilled trades.

Introduction to Millwrighting

Description: Students will develop knowledge of safety legislation, lock-out and isolation procedures, protective clothing and equipment, confined space procedures, housekeeping rules, and fire/electrical/chemical hazards. Students will also develop skills in the selection, safe use and care of cutting and non-cutting tools and in the use of measuring devices.

Exploring CNC Programming Basics

Description:

Students will be exposed to general machine shop practices, including clamping, cutting tools, speeds and feeds and as well as blueprint reading. The students use CNC simulator software to write a basic lathe and mill programs. The students will be exposed to industrial CNC equipment, set-ups and operation.

Metal Joining and Cutting
WELD2545

Description:

This course will introduce the student to the fundamentals of Oxy-Fuel Welding (OFW), Braze Welding (OFB), Oxy-Fuel Cutting (OFC), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Online theory modules will cover the safe set up and working practices for these processes, as well as introduce the student to the basic concepts involved in each process operation. The shop component will see the student implement safe working practices along with skills development in OFW, OFB, OFC, SMAW and the GMAW process. Students will practice welding various joint types on mild steel and use the OFC process to make straight and bevel cuts, pierce holes and cut shapes out of mild steel plate. Students will learn about the required equipment, set up equipment safely, and use proper operational procedures.
