This innovative four-year co-op program is like no other offered in the province of Ontario, addressing the need for professional accountants and auditors with information technology expertise. Students acquire the skills needed in today's global business environment, blending a comprehensive education of theory, integrated applied projects and work terms.

Graduates who complete the program at an acceptable minimum grade level, meet the educational requirements for direct entry into the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Professional Education Program (PEP) which is part of an individual's path to obtaining their full CPA designation.

Conestoga College facilitates recruitment on an ongoing basis - there are no hard deadlines. Typical time frames for work terms are listed below.

Postings are accepted beginning four months before the start of a term until all students have secured employment provided the minimum 12 consecutive weeks of full-time work is met.

Conestoga College collects data on hourly wages of co-operative education students and offers suggested ranges as a service to employers for the purpose of establishing fair and competitive compensation.

Our experience has been that employers increase wages as skills increase, particularly when employing students for more advanced work terms. The Co-operative Education Office can provide assistance to employers in establishing appropriate wage rates.

Work term capabilities

Specific skills and abilities that students are typically capable of performing during a work term are listed below.

  • Prepare financial statements using domestic or international generally accepted accounting principles (excluding foreign currency translations)
  • Recommend to management appropriate accounting and financial techniques for planning and control in domestic or international settings
  • Participate in external audits
  • Assess the effect of domestic federal taxation on planning and decision-making for individuals
  • Communicate effectively in both domestic and international contexts
  • Ability to collaborate with others, ability to integrate information cross-functionally, critical and creative thinking, self-evaluation of own performance and professional development needs, and leadership
  • Develop an appreciation of the concepts and values required to enhance the quality of life for self and others in the home, workplace and the local and global community through an exploration of selected areas of aesthetics, civic life, culture, personal development, society, work or science and technology
  • Participate in internal audits
  • Assess employee and organizational information and administration systems through the effective use of information technology which is culturally, legally and ethically appropriate
  • Assess management’s application of risk-management techniques to specific business situations
  • Assess the effect of domestic federal taxation on planning and decision-making for corporations
